New drive for PowerEdge T420 RAID drives

One of the drives on our T420 failed and we replaced it.  The new drive is showing as unallocated and it does not have the usual blinking lights.  How do I get the new drive to reintegrate with the array?  Someone told me that I need to start the RAID utility by pressing Shift-I during POST.  Is this correct?

Thanks,

-Steph

Whatacutup,

The prompt would depend on the controller installed, but more than likely is accessed by hitting CTRL-R at the prompt for the Poweredge Expandable Raid Controller prompt on startup.

Once there you can set the replacement drive as a Global Hotspare, that should cause it to rebuild.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the speedy reply.  I will be working on the server this weekend and will report back.

I was able to boot into the PERC H310 config utility and set the drive to be a hot spare.  And now I just wait?

It should show that it is in a rebuilding state now.

It is not rebuilding.  State is Ready and Power Status is Spun Up and the available tasks are Blink, Unblink, and Unassign Global Hot Spare.  What do I need to do to make it rebuild?  Or is it needing one drive to be a hot spare?  There are 3 physical drives in a RAID 5 setup plus the hot spare.  What am I missing?

Thanks,

-Steph

Is the drive that has been assigned as the hotspare the same size and speed as the other drives in the raid 5, or larger? I ask as it can't be used if smaller or slower than the drives in the Raid 5.

Thanks for that... How can I check the size and speed of the replacement drive?

Would you run and export a SupportAssist collection for me, you can find details on doing so from here. Once completed would you private message me the svc tag so I can review it? Thank you.

I am a little out of my depth here.

I used racadm to find the idrac IP and then tried to go to https://{idrac-ip-address} but I get an error message saying "This site can’t be reached"

What's next?

Thanks,

-Steph

Are you able to ping the ip for the iDrac and get a response? If not then verify what port the iDrac cable is plugged into, as well as what port it is set for in the iDrac NIC settings. If you have an iDrac Express then the NIC setting should be set to Shared, and the it would be shared through NIC 1, if you have a iDrac Enterprise then it should be set as Dedicated, and plugged into the iDrac port (port with wrench under it, below PCI slots).

Ping it afterwards and see if there is a response.
