PE 2950 Systems Build and Update Utility

Hi,

I'm sorry for bothering, I tried to look into other's posts, but I wasn't able to find what I'm looking for.

I just received a PE2950 and I want to run some updates (BIOS, Firmware, etc).

I downloaded Dell Systems Build and Update Utility 2.2 and Server Update Utility 7.1.1 ISO...but my server has only a CD drive (no DVD).

So I don't know how to boot these utilities.

I read here http://communities.vmware.com/message/1135043 to download and run the CD version of SBUU and to extract the repository folder from SUU ISO and put it on a usb drive.

Now, I just wanted to know if this can work, because I found this: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails?driverId=H56T7&fileId=2731106269 but 2950 is not mentioned in compatibility list.

Also, how should I format the usb drive partition?

Thanks

Matteo

Hello Matteo

Now, I just wanted to know if this can work, because I found this: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails?driverId=H56T7&fileId=2731106269 but 2950 is not mentioned in compatibility list.

Yes, you can boot from 5.5 but I'm not sure it will properly detect the SUU 7.1.1. I would recommend that you burn the SBUU 6.5 DVD ISO to the USB drive using a utility like unetbootin. Also, make sure the option to allow USB emulation is enabled in the system BIOS. Then you can boot from the correct SBUU via your USB drive.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-2950?driverId=NF1CT&osCode=WNET&fileId=2731102793

I would recommend FAT32 on the file system. That seems to be the standard format most applications want USB drives in. If you use the method I described above then you will need to put the SUU on a second USB drive or copy it to an FTP location on your network.

Thanks

Hello Daniel,

many thanks for your suggestions!

Just one last question: on the Drivers & Downloads page for my product, it makes mw download this file:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-2950?driverId=XKXCF&osCode=XI51&fileId=3104071896

(that's cdu_2.2_core_702) instead of the one you suggested.

Which is the correct one?

Thanks again

Matteo

How are you burning your ISO?  Can you see the contents of the disc when you browse it, or do you see the ISO file?

Go into the system BIOS(F2). Check the USB Flash Drive Emulation Type setting. Make sure it is either set for automatic or hard drive. Then check the Boot Sequence, make sure hard drive is in the list.

If it still gives the OS not found message then press F11 during boot. It will bring up the boot options list and allow you to select which device to boot from. You should see the USB drive in the list. It may be listed as a hard drive.

Thanks

HD is in the list.

I already tried that (F11) , but I keep getting "Missing operating system" error

I tried both with Emulation set to hard drive and auto.

Now I'm trying to "reinstall" it using open manage make_bootable_usb.sh

Hope it works

if you follow the 2ND video on this link, it will show you how to make the bootable iso that should fit on a cd.

Ok, finally I was able to boot into SBUU.

I ran a modified version of  make_bootable_usb.sh from a CentOS VM, because it uses unetinfo command, which has been obsoleted by unetadm.

I also had to remove SYSMGT folder to make it fit into my USB key.

Now I'm trying to create a valid repository on usb.

I tried to copy the repository/ folder from SUU Iso into another USB key but it doesn't work.

So I'm now trying to build it using Dell Repository Manager on a Win7 VM.

Hope it works...

Ok, it shows how to export a bundle...but, how should I choose the bundle to export?

There are two: one named linux and one windows. I just want to update everything that needs to be updated, regardless of the OS.

Select Linux. The operating system does not matter when you are updating outside of an operating system. It will only update firmware and BIOS, not drivers, outside of an OS. Selecting Linux will make it bootable and also keep it from downloading unnecessary drivers.

I thought it was working, but I was wrong.

It ended up saying that this update package is not compatible with my system...

I don't understand...I downloaded Pe2950 bundle...

Why is such difficult to update a system?

I did, I booted directly from the image created with repository manager. It ran for a while but then it ended up with that message...

If you followed Rey's steps then don't boot to the SBUU. Boot directly from the repository manager CD that you created.
