PE 2950 fans running at 12K RPM after adding RAM?
Hi All, after adding (4) 8GB quad ranked RDIMM's to my 2950 III, the Server fans consistently run around 12K RPM's. The BIOS (v.2.7) and BMC (v2.37) have been updated, but did not help to lower fan RPM's. Server power draw is 324 watts and ambient system board temp is 16 C. If I run with only the original (4) 2GB Dual Ranked RDIMM's, the fans idle around 7K RPM. So my question is, is 12K RPM within the normal operating range of these fans? I can deal with the added noise if this is normal, but I don't want the fans to die a premature death if this is abnormal? Thanks!

It is normal for memory configurations over 16GB to raise the fan speeds, but I don't know how much is 'normal'. 12K sounds high to me, but if you have updated the BIOS and ESM/BMC (and PERC firmware), then it is probably at intended levels. All my 2950's have 8GB, but we will be repurposing one, upgrading RAM, so hopefully I will have an answer for you in the next few weeks ... if nobody with that configuration comes by to confirm.

If the fan speeds exceed the operating range the server will give a E1310 or E1311 error on the LCD and also create an entry in the system event log. I'm not sure what the actual RPM specification is but since you have updated the BIOS and BMC you should be ok. As theflash1932 said, the larger sized DIMMs will induce greater fan speeds since they do actually run hotter. If you see any unusual behavior though I would definitely want to make sure it's not thermally related of course. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks Guys, appreciate the feedback. I'd really like to hear from someone that has 8GB RDIMM's in a 2950 to see if they're experiencing the same high RPM fan issue. Even with just (2) 8GB RDIMM's installed, the fans spin consistently at 12K RPM, but with (8) 4GB RDIMM's installed, they only spin at 7K RPM. The memory vendor claims this is likely due to the different architecture/power draw of the 8GB RDIMM's, Dual Rank vs. Quad Rank. I'm going to have three of these servers in a vSphere cluster at a remote office so this is going to be painfully loud...
