PE 2950 firmware on NF500?
Hi everyone,
I'm a n00b to this community, so forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong section.
I have a PowerVault NF500 (QC Xeon 5420, FBDIMM, PERC 6/i, 6x 750GB 7k2 SAS) which, after close inspection, on hardware level looks identical to a PowerEdge 2950 III.
Can I flash the NF500's with PE 2950 firmware and "convert" it to a regular PowerEdge 2950?
Anyone?

It is definitely NOT my intention to mislead anyone; that's totally against my principles/beliefs. Any potential buyer will receive all information on this machine. But I think I will take your advise on listing it the way you suggest -- PowerEdge 2950 (PowerVault NF500) -- 'cause I do not want to risk bricking the device.

You might be able to "force-flash" the BIOS to the 2950 firmware, but why? What are you hoping to do/gain? They are indeed nearly identical.

I would list it as an PowerVault NF500 (PowerEdge 2950) or PowerEdge 2950 (PowerVault NF500) - it is similar enough that is should not be an issue to advertise it as essentially the same server. Otherwise, like I said, you could probably force-flash it with the 2950 BIOS, but force-flashing devices with unintended firmware can brick the device. The chassis and Service Tag would still show it as a PV though, so they may feel they were deceived if they buy a "2950" but see the chassis marked with PowerVault NF500 and the Service Tag pulling up as an NF500.

Well, to be quite frank, I do not need the PowerVault anymore, and would like to sell it. But, since no one knows what a NF500 is, I will have a better chance selling the server as a PowerEdge 2950.

Sounds good. I didn't think it was your intention to deceive ... I just wanted to give you a heads up on other ways it might be originally identified. Take care.
