PE2850 USB DVD burner (w/BartPE and Ghost32 v8.2)

Hi,

I'm attempting to generate a Ghost image of a partion (which is part of a RAID 5
array and is formatted as NTFS) in my Dell PE2850.

I've created a boot CD (using BartPE) containing Symantec Ghost 8.2.  I'm
able to boot from CD, invoke Ghost, generate an image, and store it on another
partition.

However, I'd like to burn a DVD containing that image.  When I attempt to connect
an external  USB 2.0 DVD burner (or for that matter, when I attempt to connect an
external USB 2.0 hard drive), the PE2850  ignores the boot CD (and boots to the
system partition of the scsi RAID 5 array instead).

I'd like to burn the image directly to DVD from within Ghost (as opposed to first
creating a Ghost image on  one of the partitions and then, in a 2nd step, burn
the image onto DVD.

I believe that Ghost 8.2 supports USB DVD burners.  However, they must be
connected to the system before boot.  As such, booting from the CD and *THEN*
connecting the external USB DVD burner is not an option.

Q: Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 DVD burner (LaCie D2) to a PE2850
*AND* have it boot from a bootable CD in the internal CD drive?

Q: Has anyone successfully used this (or similar) process to generate a DVD (backup)
     of a partition in a RAID5 array?

Thank you.

It's not really an answer to your question, but may be a work-around.

What about loading network drivers on the bootable CD and dump the image to a share on your network? Then if you need to ghost it back, you can ghost from the network as well.
