PERC H710 - RAID5 - Missing Drive Replacement Issues
I have a PowerEdge R620 with a few disk groups. One of which is consists of two degraded virtual disks. Four physical disks are used to form the virtual disks, but one of the drives is shown on BIOS as missing regardless of whether the failed drive or the new drive with the same part number is inserted. I read that the RAID is supposed to be setup with a Hot Spare for automatic drive rebuild, but I guess it wasn't setup that way. So I am wondering if there is really no way to resolve these two degraded virtual disks through the BIOS except through the use of a third party software. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for choosing Dell. If it is shown as foreign, you need to clear the foreign. Then when the disk turns ready, that’s when you can use hotspare.

Can you connect new drive in any of the free slot (if available) and see whether the BIOS detecting the same. If yes you can assign the new drive as dedicated hot spare of degraded virtual disk and this could initiate a rebuild.
Note : It is good practice to backup your data before carrying out any maintenance tasks.

Hi, thanks for choosing Dell, if I may: for now we don’t have lots of information in detail from you, so I’d say first go to Raid controller BIOS to check virtual disk status or physical disk status. If you have OMSA installed you can check the same from OMSA. ^^

I don't know what other information you might need. Maybe you want the detail configuration?

Hi, looks like you have a disk fail, I’m assuming the front HDD LED state is amber…
Missing means it’s most likely that it’s not detected hence the disk fail.

Is the drive on slot 5 still showing as failed when you inserted new drive?

When I swapped it out with the new drive when it is powered down, it is shown as Foreign. Sadly, I can't select it to rebuild the virtual disk. The option for the new drive is grayed out.

Yep, it is lit amber with the failed drive. When I swapped it out with the new drive, it is lit green. However, there is no option to rebuild it or select the new Foreign drive to be part of the missing drive. Is there no way to rebuild it through the BIOS or through Dell software mean other than using a third party software?

Thank you so much for that information. I have been stuck on that issue for quite some time
It is very interesting though. All I need to do was clearing the foreign drive and designate it as a global hot spare. That was very easy. It is now rebuilding to be part of the missing drive. It seems it can automatically figure which drive to replace with.
