Are you already running the updated BIOS as well?

And make sure you are using Server Administrator rev 1.1

Is there a new version of server administrator to go with this? My active bezel is now showing errors due to fan speed being below the failure range (which cannot be changed.)

By the way:

THANK YOU--you've made my entire office happier!

Dwayne,

Didnt know there was a new BIOS to go with the firmware. That solved the problem. Thanks!

Is there a fix like this for Poweredge 1400? We have a small office and have the server in a separate room, but it's very loud.

Thanks for any help.

Is there any other way to install this. The upgrade failed using Server Administrator. I've tried upgrading everything and I'm at the point that I can not install the OpenManage Software anymore (it hangs at the the Preparing Wizard screen).

I have read about using RACADM but can not find that utility anywhere. Can I download it?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi,

You can download the RACADM. It is part of this (huge) download:

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator, NW, 2000, NT 4.0, v. 1.1.0, A00
Filename: DOMN31_A00.exe (266.61 MB)

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

When you expand the download, RACADM in in this subdirectory:
c:\era10\mn_pkg\

or if you have the DRAC III, this directory: c:\rac11\mn_pkg\

Run Setup from the respective directory and follow this procedure:
1. Download and unzip update file on
the server with RAC installed. Extract the update file
to the c:\temp directory. The firmware update file is
called firmimg.bm1.
2. Open a command shell window on the server with the RAC
hardware and update file.
3. In the command shell, enter the following racadm command.

racadm fwupdate -p -u -d c:\temp

-p: upload the update file from path specified using -d opt.
-u: update RAC after loading new firmware.
-d: path of firmware update file location. This path should
not have the filename.

4. After the update completes, the RAC will reset.

Hi Debbie,

There is no software solution to turn off or slow the fans, however if the noise level is the problem, I do have a solution.

These are the parts required to lower the noise level on a PowerEdge
1400:

Note: In order to make the fan more quiet it was necessary make it slower. Since the processor fan is now operating at a slower RPM, it was necessary to re-design the processor heatsink and heatsink clip to provide for greater heat dissipation. In case of dual processor systems, replace the heatsink and heatsink clip for both processors.

Rear Chassis Processor Fan P/N: 7C219 (This fan mounts to the read of the chassis and has finger guards)
Front Chassis Fan P/N: 8C152 (This fan mounts to the front of the chassis in a fan housing and has no finger guards)
Processor Heatsink P/N: 2C970 · Heatsink Clip P/N: 4C788

Thanks for the quick response... however, it still doesn't work.

Using RACADM, I get nothing but errors. Here is what I get:

C:\Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\RAC\MN>racadm getconfig -f mike.txt
Checking group [idRacInfo]
racadm getconfig: Transport: ERROR: objectIdGet. RC=14

C:\Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\RAC\MN>racadm getsensors
racadm getsensors: Transport: ERROR: (RC=-1)

C:\Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\RAC\MN>racadm fwupdate -p -u -d c:\temp2
racadm fwupdate: ERROR: objectIdGet failure RC = 0

Obviously, I can't get any info from the RAC.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

Have you updated the System BIOS first?

Dell Server System BIOS, PowerEdge 2650, A04

We also have the same problem.

Have a 2 week old 2650 that we "almost need earmuffs" to work in the computer room with!!! Operating system is Windows 2000 Adv Server.

We have updated BIOS to A04 and have installed Server Administrator 1.1.

When trying to intall the RAC firmware through the Server Administrator we get an error when it hits 88%, and aborts.

When trying to install using racadm fwupdate -p -u -d c:\temp we get the error ERROR: (RC=-1).

We would also very much appreciate any help!

you may not have installed the FULL installation, including the remote service.
Try this to start the remote access service:

1) Put in the Openmanage CD
2) Go to the folder d:\era10\mn_pkg and run setup.exe
3) Go to the folder c:\program files\dell\openmanage\rac\mn and run racsrvc.exe -install. This will install the RAC service.
4) Extract the 1.07 firmware into the folder c:\temp (firmimg.bm1)
5) From the c:\program files\dell\openmanage\rac\mn folder run racadm fwupdate -p -u -d c:\temp. This will update the firmware.
6) Run racadm fwupdate -s to check on the status of the flash. Below are the responses you will get along with their meaning.

0X4 FWUPD_STATUS_WORK_UPDATE update file execution started.
- The firmware flash is in progress

racadm fwupdate: Transport: ERROR: (RC=-1)
- The ERA is restarting. You need to wait a couple of minutes while it restarts. No communication with the ERA

0X0 FWUPD_STATUS_OK fwupdate completed successfully
- The firmware flash was successfull
