PSU fans not spinning on 2008 model CS24-SC
I have a Dell 1U Model CS24-SC. It has 2 Intel Quad Core Xeon L5420's in it. There is no service tag sticker on it. Also, the service tag does not show up in the BIOS. Instead, the BIOS shows the first seven digits from the serial number of the unit. This looks very similar in ways to the current PowerEdge C1100. Though, this definitely has a different motherboard and is older. My server was manufactured in 2008.
I noticed that the PSU fans never spin. Is this normal for the C1100 model? I was thinking that maybe they are temperature controlled fans and the temperature has not exceeded the threshold for them to cut on. I've had it running in a very cool environment for testing.

Any idea where I could download BIOS / firmware updates for this server?
I tried calling Dell support on this. Since I didn't have a service tag, I got transferred around a few times. I've been on hold for almost an hour and a half since the last transfer. I don't think I'm getting anywhere using the phone route.

Thank you for the pictures. I did some follow up on this issue; the CS24-SC was a custom solution for a customer with no support. There are no service tags, no parts or support options for this piece of equipment through Dell. You may be able to find parts from ebay or other used equipment sources.

These fans should spin up like any other fan. From reviewing our cloud servers, none of the rest used this particular power supply. What I see in the others are 1100-1400w units. I was able to locate a replacement at this link: www.txcesssurplus.com/.../Detail

I contacted the seller regarding the PSU fans not spinning. He told me that another buyer had complained about the same thing and returned his server. The seller inspected the PSU fans to find that what appears to be the fan blades is actually part of the fan frame. The fan blades that rotate are deeper in the fan assembly. He posted pictures at www.flickr.com/.../44212945@N03 to show this. Thankfully, my PSU fans are working fine! :)

The PSU is an AcBel model FS6011 (Customer ID: 245G). If anyone knows if this PSU uses temperature controlled fans and completely turns off the fans when the temperature is low, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
After staying on hold with Dell for 2 hours, I was abruptly disconnected. :(

I tried using the update files for the C1100, but they would not work. I noticed that the BIOS for the C1100 is 3Bxx. The current BIOS for my system is 3A09. The model of my motherboard states S45 with a full BIOS version of S45_3A09 (06/17/2008). The BIOS uses American MegaTrends v02.61. It's odd to me that there is no mention of this system on Dell's site and it doesn't have a service tag. Could this be an unreleased model, possibly a prototype?

Thanks for the response.
My remaining concern is whether or not it is okay that the PSU fans are not spinning up. I know that some PSU's will completely turn off the fans if the temperature is below a certain threshold, but not all PSU do that. The PSU used in this server is an AcBel model FS6011 (Customer ID: 245G). Is this particular PSU used in another Dell server? Are there other Dell servers that have PSU's that completely turn off the fans when the temperature is low enough?

Hi there, Just acquired two of these servers... I wonder what is the part number for the rack mounting rails, and bezel?
Also, does this server includes an SD slot?
Wonder if the rails from R200 will fit?

I'm not sure about the rails or bezel. I mounted it on top of a stationary rack shelf and secured it with the front screws and cable ties on the sides. :-P
There is no SD slot. There are 2 USB ports on the front and 2 on the back where you can connect a USB SD card reader.
From what I gathered while talking to Dell on the phone, this model was custom made for a big customer. That's why you won't find any reference to it on the Dell site. They wouldn't disclose which customer it came from. They did say that it was produced in large quantities for the customer and without any support provided. That's why it doesn't have a service tag list on a sticker or in the BIOS.

I installed ESXi 5 on a USB flash drive without a problem. It may or may not work with an SD card reader though. If you go this route, be sure to specify a valid directory under ESXi's advanced configuration for the log directory. Otherwise, the logs won't be available.
