In the bios you need to enable the VT technology to be able to make x64 virtual machines.
Here is some information about the bios options. As the page shows, VT technology is disabled by default. After you enable it, you won't have to reinstall the VMware OS, or even recreate the VM itself (not much there right now as it wouldn't start up anyway). I have run into this in the past with a PE2950.
