PowerEdge 1800 wont turn on, please help!!!
Hi everyone,
Today our server didnt turn on, so we checked and figured it was the power supply, so we took it to CompUSA and they confirmed it was dead, so we got a 750 power supply (it had a 650 originally) but now when I turn on the power supply switch on the back, it would just blink a blue light on the front for a second, and the front fan would spin for a mili-second, and then NOTHING, totally dead......
Please, can someone help me? Thanks.

You may look at removing extra parts that are not needed for the system to POST, i.e., PCI cards, extra memory, CD-ROM, etc. See if you can locate the piece of hardware that is causing the system not to power on completely.

This may be 7 days later than you needed, but we just went through this. We had the same symptoms on our 1800. Basically, the motherboard on ours was cooked. We had a drive fail. We completed a normal backup then shut the system down to replace the drive. The system would not turn back on after that. We replaced the power supply, but no joy. Our support expired in October, so a paid support call to Dell got us the unwelcome answer that the motherboard had also failed. We purchased a refurbed server and transferred the drive images to a new array on that server and brought it back online.
I removed the motherboard from it's frame and turned it over. On inspection there was a surface mount part on the back side near where the power connector is that had failed. The green paint was burnt. There is a transistor associated on the front side that showed a small burn mark on one corner. That was it...dead motherboard. replacement costs from Dell were about 1/2 what we paid for the refurbed server. However, we get three years warranty on the new server.
Sad news.
