PowerEdge 1850 CPU Upgrade

Hi All,

I currently have a PowerEdge 1850 (purchased late 2005) with a single Intel Xeon 3GHz 800MHz FSB processor and the 0W7747 revision A3 motherboard. I would like to upgrade the CPU and install two Dual Core Xeon 2.8GHz 800MHz FSB processors (Codename: Paxville DP, Spec: SL8MA). However, I'm unsure if these processors are compatible with the version of the motherboard that I currently have. The Bios is currently at A02 which I will probably need to update to A07.

I have read that the SL8MA processor is compatible with the 1850 but I believe some motherboards versions are not supported. Can anyone shed some light on this as I'm finding impossible to find information on compatible processors for the 1850?

Thanks for any assistance!

I found www.velocitytechsolutions.com and they knew which mainboard part numbers would accept the dual core processors that you are looking at and hooked me up with what I needed. Might be worth a try and they do ship international. Good Luck!

The Paxville processor does show to be a processor that the 1850 was configurable with. I have part number  TD428, for that processor.

Here are the specs on it.

Sales can be reached at 1-800-626-9534, they can give you a quote on those parts.

On a side note, upgrading the BIOS and BMC is a great thing to do before installing new hardware.

Keep us posted,

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd rather not purchase the processors until I can confirm that the motherboard supports them as well. From research I have done it would appear early versions of the 1850 do not support the Paxville while later revisions do. My 1850 was manufactured in June 2005 which may be early in the production cycle - not sure.  If I contact Dell technical support with the Asset Tag - would they be able to confirm? This server is now out of support.

Thanks.

"This server is now out of support."

Dell server technical support is always free in US/Canada, regardless of warranty status.

I'm based in Dublin, Ireland so not sure if technical support is free.

Thank you veltech for the link! I got in touch with them and they have confirmed that the motherboard I have will not support two dual core Paxvilles.

Thanks for all the feedback.
