PowerEdge 1850 Memory
I have a couple of 1850s with 1 x 3.0Ghz/800Mhz/2MB CPUs and 1GB memory. I would like to upgrade these to 2 x Dual Core 2.8Ghz/800Mhz/4MB Cache and 16GB memory for various 32/64bit Xen applications.
The 1850 specifications say that the system will accept 16GB by way of 4GB/400Mhz/ECC/Registered/Dual Rank/PC2-3200 DIMMs. In my search for a supplier, I also found these:
4GB/667Mhz/ECC/Registered/Quad Rank/PC2-5300
4GB/667Mhz/ECC/Registered/Dual Rank/PC2-5300
4GB/800Mhz/ECC/Registered/Dual Rank/PC2-6400
4GB/667Mhz/ECC/Registered/Single Rank/PC2-5300
Most of these options are less expensive than the recommended PC2-3200.
Question is - is there any fallout to using something with a faster clock like a 667Mhz PC2-5300 or an 800Mhz PC2-6400? Will it step itself down?

Faster memory shouldn't be a problem, however, I would recommend to go with memory from a vendor that guarantees compatibility with your specific system. 2 such examples are Crucial and Kingston.
