PowerEdge 2500 -- CPU and VRM upgrade/compatibility
Firstly, I would like to begin with an apology for this post, should one be necessary due to this particular question having been previously answered. I have scoured the internet for hours on end, searching for a rock-solid, definitive answer but to no avail. I have never posted to a forum or created a thread before; please, be gentle...
I own a PowerEdge 2500 that is currently configured with two 933 MHz processors (SL5U3), each having a 4F522 VRM. The mainboard/motherboard is of the 5E957 variety. According to the Dell website, it is a Tualatin board (?). A year ago I purchased a motherboard from a PowerEdge 1650 (I believe it is anyhow) for the two 1.4 GHz P3-S Tualatin processors (SL6BY) it houses, as I -- at the time -- was unable to find just a pair of processors for less than the cost of the board with the processors. Anywho... Now for my question: will the two 1.4's be a "plug-and-play" affair with the hardware I currently have, or will I need a new pair of VRMs to go along with the new processors? I have spent countless hours researching this topic; to no avail. I am unable to find a concrete answer anywhere. Even piecing together the bits and pieces of information from here and there I am without an answer.
I tend to be an extremely resourceful individual, finding answers/solutions to my questions/problems without facilitating the need to ask for the help of others, but this one has got me. I don't want to plug these CPUs into my server, power it up, and risk letting all the magic smoke out of one or more components inside, leaving me with a 90 lb. paperweight. There is just too much conflicting information on the internet about the compatibility of these items; from what I can see the answer should be "yes," but I am NOT trying to find out the hard way that the answer is "NO."
So in advance, I would like to thank -- very much for his/her time -- one and all who may respond.
Again, thank you. I hope this plea isn't too lengthy, based on the seemingly simple question I have submitted-
