PowerEdge 2650 - DRAC Firmware update cli fails

Hi Can anyone help please...i come from a HP server backgroud so Dell is alien to me.

Trying to change the IP on a DRAC but cannot as the fw is out of date.

racadm setniccfg: Firmware: This command is not supported on this platform for this firmware version.

So I will update the fw if required but:

C:\>racadm fwupdate -p -u -d c:\dell\fw\
Transfering file "c:\dell\fw\firmimg.bm1" to the RAC, please wait...
racadm fwupdate: Transport: ERROR: (RC=-1)
racadm fwupdate: Transport: ERROR: (RC=-1)

Can anyone advise please? Lost!

Have you tried running the update from the Windows executable? http://downloads.dell.com/sysman/RAC_FRMW_WIN_R184904.EXE

Let me know the results.

Is there no option for remote viewing capability with this version of DRAC's...I have searched in all the options and their is no console session?

The Remote console should be available. you will need to check on a few objects in the Operating System. First, go to add/remove programs, choose to change Open Manage Server Administrator. Then choose modify and make sure that the RAC component is enabled. Next, go to device manager and make sure that under Remote Access Controller, there exists PCI Function 0, PCI Function 2, RAC Virtual UART Port. Enable those devices if they are not enabled.   Also, make sure that console redirect ports 5900 and 5981 are not blocked by the Operating System. 5900 is for keyboard/mouse and 5981 is for video.

You have a few options to access the DRAC\ERA

The ERA/DRAC will normally be accessed thru HTTP at the IP address which has been configured. To see what address is configured, and for some other settings, you can type CTRL-E when the Dell boots, to get into the ERA/DRAC setup screen.

Use OpenManage, download from here: http://downloads.dell.com/sysman/OM_5.4.0_ManNode_A01.exe   URL: https://your-website-name-or-IP-address:1311 (and remember you may need to accept the self-signed security certificate). The DRAC attribute information you can see thru OMSA are:

  • Version
  • NIC Enabled?
  • DHCP Enabled?
  • Current IP Address
  • Current IP Subnet
  • Current IP Gateway
  • SMTP Enabled?
  • SMTP Server IP Address (may be localhost address of 127.0.0.1)
  • Remote Floppy Boot Enabled
  • Remote Floppy TFTP Server IP Address
  • Remote Floppy TFTP Server Path
  • Firmware Update IP Address
  • Firmware Update Path

If you login to the ERA/DRAC web page with the configured user and password, you will see these tabs at the top of the page:

Dell DRAC/ERA 2650 Web Page Tabs

Among the most useful options of the ERA/DRAC is the ability to power-cycle a remote (perhaps many thousands of miles away!) server, as you can see on the “Remote Access” tab:

Dell DRAC/ERA 2650 Web Page - Server Reset Options

Thanks Geoff - this is all configured up and I have connection via http in the DRACs.

But I do not see the option for Remote Connection/Remote console...

Is this a feature introduced in later versions?

Thanks

What worked for me was to extract the EXE and put the firmimg.bm1 onto a tftp server and then use the DRAC web GUI to point it to the tftp server IP and upgrade the firmware

Otherwise the EXE was bombing out under win 2008 server all the time...
