PowerEdge 2800 Server won't recognize drives
Hello, I do volenteer work for my church and about a year ago our server crashed but I was unable to repair the server. This is a backup server so I didn't lose all my data but i am concerned that my primary server which is the same hardware will fail. In the PERC/CERC BIOS Configuration Utility UB27 no drives appear in the Easy Configuration Array Selection Menu even though I have 5 drives installed. Not sure if I need to format the drives to install a new server OS. If I do I don't know how.
My goal is to make this a virtual server but for now I would like to reinstall a new server 2012 or 2016 install. Any assistance would be appreciated.

From the Main menu, go to Configure, Physical Disks to look for drives connected to it. You may need to CLEAR the config before you can configure anything else.
This server is too old, I would change your plan: replace it with something newer or plan on installing 2008 R2 and run it as a physical server. Server 2012 will install, but it doesn't run very well. From reports, 2012 R2 will not install on it, nor will 2016.
It does not support VT, so a virtual host (ESXi or Hyper-V) is out of the question. You would need ESXi 3.5, which does not require VT or Hyper-V 2008.

I will look into installing ESXi 3.5. Do you know if this will allow for Server 2012 or 16?

From the Management Menu I clicked Configure then Easy Configuration and no disk shows. I clicked Clear on the Management Menu to clear the disk then I clicked Configure from the same menu the Clear Configuration and it still shows no disk. Any window I click shows no disk. The Configure menu has Easy Configuration, New Configuration, View/Add Configuration and Specify Boot Drive show no disk.

Anything in View/Add?
In my experience, 2012 will install but doesn't run very well (slow, probably graphics). I got rid of all my 28x0's before R2 came out, so I haven't tried it myself, but several have reported that 2012 R2 will not install (or installs but has a blank screen, or something like that). It is highly unlikely that 2016 will run on it.
Runs 2008 R2 great.
ESXi 3.5 and this server are so old … why bother? You could get a used R710 for pretty cheap and it will run everything fine.

Nothing in add/view. I switched the disk around and the server recognized one of the drives but the next reboot the drive disappeared. I must have rebooted this server 10 times and it hasn't recognized any of the drives since. My next plan is to install the three other drives I have to see if they are recognized by the server.
The plan is to get a new Dell hardware but we are waiting for donations to support the purchase. This hardware will have Server 2016 OS. The plan with the older hardware is to move it to a smaller campus as a file and print, document server and domain controller. I will also use it for training of new support members that come on the assist.
I appreciate the assistance.

theflash, I like the idea of the PowerEdge R710. If I purchase the one I found below what will I need besides the hard drives?
