PowerEdge 4400 Service Manual?

Hello,

I recently have been asked to repair and upgrade a Dell PowerEdge 4400 server (Tag #BMWP701) that runs our business critical ERP system. In order to make sure I am using the correct parts and configuring it properly, I need to know all the configuration of connectors, pin outs, jumper settings, etc. This should all be described in the Service Manual.

I've scoured the Dell Support website, and searched through the ftp site, but I have been unable to locate it. Can anyone help me find it?

Please help me if you can!

Thanks in advance,

Jim

FYI,

I finally found the "Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) 4400 Systems Service Manual!

It looks like someone had printed the HTML version from Dell's website on 10/20/2006, and saved it as a PDF. On each page it lists the following link: <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>  this link currently redirects to the support site that only has the user guide.

It was on a manual reselling website here:

http://www.justmanuals.us/product_info.php?products_id=4903

(I was able to download it free, but I had to register first.)

To verify, I checked the Internet Archive "Wayback Machine" also known as https://archive.org/web/  .

https://web.archive.org/web/20050327063207/http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe4400/en/sm/index.htm

They do have that page and information listed! It looks like Dell neglected to continue to post that information.

Anyway, thanks for your help!

First of all, thank you for the reply!

Unfortunately (from the part of the link I can see) I believe that is the User Guide, and not the Service Manual. The User Guide does not list the information I need. The Service Manual should include much more detail on the motherboard, power distribution board, jumper settings, firmware flashing, etc. Also, the link you included was shortened and did not include the full path (this may be a characteristic of Dell's forum software to strip links).

Does anyone have a link to the PowerEdge 4400 Service Manual?

Thanks again,

Jim

Yes, the dumb forum shortens certain types of links and does not like FTP links at all.

Not all systems have a separate Service Manual. The Users Guide is the only documentation Dell published for the 4400:

http://ftp.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/

If there is something missing, ask your question in these forums, and someone can probably help you. Almost no Dell documentation has pin-out information or instructions for flashing firmware. Other components, like the motherboard or PDB, rarely get anything besides replacement instructions.

I'm surprised that Dell does not have the Service Manual posted. Perhaps this is something that was omitted as they migrated from one support website to another. It is a 14 year old system after all.

That said, I found this link where someone is selling what they call a Service Manual:

https://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/738022-dell-poweredge-4400-computer-service-manual

It shows a sample image showing how to remove the motherboard. Is this for real, and how can they sell it? I don't want to pay $6.99 for something that Dell should have available somewhere to their customers.

Thanks,

Jim

It's like someone creating their own training curriculum and content about Windows 7 then selling it - HE compiled it himself - it "could" be legit, but it is not a Dell-published manual. Many systems never had a Service Manual - sometimes the info was in the Users Guide, sometimes the info was simply never available. It "could" have been lost, but it is far more likely it never existed.
