PowerEdge 840 Dell diagnostics utilities on harddisk, same as on cd?
When booting the PowerEdge 840 server, you can press F10 for "Utility mode" which loads some diagnostics tool from what seems to be a pre-created 57 MB partition. We also got some CDs with the server, "Diagnostics and Systems service", "Drivers and Utilities", etc.
Do those CDs contain the same as on that pre-installed diags utility on the harddisk? In other words, can I just wipe the entire harddisk and install linux instead, and whenever necessary run the diagnostics from the CD? (although I guess pressing F10 won't work anymore then). Or should I keep that partition with the utilities.
There's also an empty 2.2 GB partition. Is that necessary as well? E.g. does the utility from the 57MB partition need the other 2.2GB partition for temporary files or something?

Also, when you run either the Dell Installation and Server Management CD or the Dell System Build and Update CD, it will create that partition again.

Regarding this 2.2GB partition, do you know if that happens to be there because the utilities write some data to it at startup? I noticed a short screen flashing that said something like "writing....(couldn't read)"
And about the CD re-creating that partition, I assume it won't happen directly / automatically without any notification? (especially if all the space is already in use by other partitions, in my case an Ubuntu install)

Rogier:
Are you in the United States. I am having some problems with my Poweredge 840 as well. Can you email me at <ADMIN NOTE:Email id removed per privacy policy> so that I can ask you some questions regarding the cd's without having to go thru this Forum?
Thank you,
Kerry
