With the server still having an issue with just the 8GB dimms installed in slot 1 and 2, then I would look at compatibility of the 8GB dimms. Would you provide us with more details on the 8GB dimms, as well as the 4GB? Specifically the ranking, mhz, as well as if they are registered or unbuffered dimms (Rdimms or Udimms)

I think that I've found the answer.

If I well understand table below the only way to have 32GB on a R310 is to use 4x 8GB RDIMMs

This table also explains why the configuration with only both 8GB DIMMs didn't work too (to have 16GB, the only configuration accepted seems to be 4x 4GB RDIMMs).
