PowerEdge R320 with H710 in RAID10 - how to replace failing drive?
Hello,
we have a Dell PowerEdge R320 Server with a PERC H710 Mini Controller which reports a soon to fail RAID10 Member (0:1:0). We have 4x 300GB 2,5" SAS Drives connected to 0:1:0, 0:1:1, 0:1:2 and 0:1:3 at the backpane. The operating system is a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and the Dell OMSA is v7.4.0
I already received two spare drives and would now like to know how to replace the drives, if possible without shutting down the server. In the menu at the screenshot I can only select the task to let the tray blink which houses the member disk. Do I just pull it out and replace it? I found no possibility to take it offline.
Thanks in advance and let me know if you need additional Information.

PCPKTech,
With the images you provided, as well as a translator, it appears that 0:1:0 is in a Ready state, and isn't Online. So there wouldn't be a need to force it offline, as it isn't showing currently in the Virtual Disk. Would you confirm if you are seeing the dirve listed as Foreign anywhere?
That being said, what I suggest you start with is updating the servers BIOS, iDrac, and the H710 to current. Then see ifthe situation and information is the same, if so then you should be fine removing and replacing, but lets confirm that after updating.
Let me know what you see.

Thank you for your reply, I will do the updates and report back. Is there a way to change the OMSA language so it is easier to read without a translator?
iDRAC7 updated v1.57.57 b4 to 2.65.65 b15
LC2 updated v1.4.2.12 to 2.65.65.65
Since BIOS and H710 require a reboot I will have to wait until office hours are over.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. One thing came to my mind, that might be useful to change the IE language. Worth a try.
1. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, and select Internet Options. Alternatively, in Windows, Internet Options can be accessed via Control Panel.
2. A new pop-up window/Internet Options appears. Under General tab, look for Appearance. Click on Languages button.
3. A small window called Language Preference appears. Click on Add button to add a new language.
4. In the Add Language window, select your preferred language and click Ok. Here, we would like to select English.
5. The language that is displayed when you access the portal is always the first language in your browser's language settings. Therefore, move the English language above current first language using Move Up button. In case your preferred language is already available in Language Preference window/settings, just Move Up your selected language to make it default.
6. Once finished, click OK all the way to exit Language Preference and Internet Options window.

oh okay sorry for the trouble, I just thought it is okay if we change only IE lang. It's one of murphy's law I guess haha. Other than that I really don't know any other way to change to lang. But glad to hear you figured it out.

Hi, I did as you described but it "only" changed the complete Windows Server UI Language and guess what, the OMSA stayed in german. So I reverted the settings. It may be caused by the Edge Browser that also has not been changed by my last try so I will see if it has an isolated language setting available.
Update:
Yep, that was the case, now I have the OMSA in english and will post follow up screenshots as soon as I updated the BIOS and H710.

Then I would continue as Chris suggested.

Ok, just to be sure I ask again if this is the right procedure:
1) In OMSA I let the coresponding bay of the 0:1:0 blink so I can identify it.
2) I drag out the bay with the faulty drive (while the server is running)
3) I replace the drive with a new one and plug it back in.
4) I use OMSA to initiate the rebuild and wait for it to finish
Is that correct?
Thanks in advance.

I assume you have a compatible drive. The drive seems to not belong to any VD at the moment so you have the right procedure. I would like to remind you it is recommended to take a backup of your data before replacing the drive. If the server is in production, I recommended scheduling a maintenance window to replace the drive.

Yes the new drive is the identical model as the failed one, also in capacity. Backup is done everyday and on two additional days on other target media so I have several fall back options. I will swap it out when a time window is open so I do not interfere with the primary work hours.

Sounds good to me, I believe you will handle it smoothly.

Worked like a charm, 5 minutes to swap the drive and 30 minutes to rebuild the RAID-10. Thank you very much for the help.
