PowerEdge R920 : issue with installation Windows Server 2016 -> error 0x80300001

Hello all,

I just received my new R920 with NVMe Express Flash PCIe SSD option. I installed a Dell 1.6TB PCIe NVMe 2.5 ”SSD in the first slot. First observation the H730P controller does not see it, maybe this is normal? In the BIOS I put in UEFI.

The next step is the installation of Windows Server 2016, I created a bootable USB key with the correct image, I boot without problem and start installing Windows. And there I block at the stage of the choice of the partition, the SSD is well detected, I carry out a formatting, but then I have an error message: "We could not install Windows in the location that you chose ... Here is more information about what happened: 0x80300001 ".

I have the impression that it is a problem of drivers not?

Thanks for your help

Hi,

With the error that is displayed, it does seems to be driver related issue: https://dell.to/32hzYjk. Did you do any H730P driver installation?

Would you be able to try using Lifecycle Controller to install the Windows Server 2016?

Hi Joey,

thank you for your answer.

- "Did you do any H730P driver installation? " : no, i just received my server, as is, and this is my first server

- "Would you be able to try using Lifecycle Controller to install the Windows Server 2016?": sincerely I don't know how to do that.

I attach to this post a screenshot of my PERC H730P configuration. I hope it helps.

Regards

Eric

Hi,

Here's an article on installing OS on PowerEdge: https://dell.to/2FkCYSP, I hope this helps. There is a section on using Lifecycle Controller to install OS.

Though, before starting to install OS, you may have to update the firmware on the server, starting on iDRAC, then LifeCycle Controller (LCC), lastly BIOS. https://dell.to/2RixCtT

Good evening,

after updating the LifeCycle controller my problem has changed, I can now install Windows Server 2016; the SSD is still not seen by the controller but apparently this is normal because I am in PCIe.

The problem is that after installing the OS, the system cannot boot from it, as if the SSD was not taken into account by the system although we can do an installation on it.

I also tested to install Suse 15 and it's exactly the same problem, impossible to boot from an OS. ‌‌

I am deadlocked

Hello,

Is there any chance that you could share an image of your boot order? The PCIe drives won't be controlled by the H710P controller, but rather the onboard controller. There may be something worth looking at there. If you set the onboard controller to RAID On, does the drive show up there?

If it does, you might try reinstalling Windows. I've linked to the Server 2016 driver for the S110 below. Reinstalling and loading that driver may resolve the issue.

Hello,

Thank a lot for your help.

For the boot order, yes sure, here it is:

I also give you a link to retrieve the XML file of Hardware inventory: My Hardware Inventory

Important note: my RAID controller version is H730P.

- "If you set the onboard controller to RAID On": sorry but I don't know how to do that, I looked for it though

For the boot order, yes sure, here it is:

Hi,

I'm unsure why the boot sequence is showing the Windows Boot Manager as unavailable. In fact, you did mentioned that H730P is not able to display the drive, and you're installing only 1 SSD drive. Did you create any RAID settings during the lifecycle OS installation?

Can you let me know the drive DPN#? Also, can you check if the H730P SAS cables are connected to the backplane?

Let me know.

Hi, I have not created any RAID because currently I only have one disk, a 1.6 TB SSD in NVMe PCIe. The DPN drive is: 058V30, it's an Intel SSD DC P4610 series. "can you check if the H730P SAS cables are connected to the backplane?", yes of course, I'll look at how to do this and tell you back in the day. Do you possibly have a diagram? Thanks, Eric

Hi,

You can refer to this link for diagrams: https://dell.to/3itchdf though, I'm not too sure of your backplane configuration.

I gave a check on 058V30, it's not listed as compatible with R920. That could be the reason why you could get it to work properly. You may face such issues if hardware are not compatible with the server.

Hi Joey, thank you for your reply. If the SSD drive is not compatible that would be really annoying. Where can I find the list of compatible SSDs? Kind regards, Eric

Hi,

There is no specific documentation of compatible drives for R920. I would say the Dell sales team would know best for your needs, but my best guess that you would want to sort it out by yourselves. I can provide you a couple of 1.6TB PCIe SSDs PN# that is listed in our database.

But I'm curious that, you're able to install OS into the drive, 1.6T right? Though, the RAID controller H730P is not picking up the drive, therefore, I can't guide you to check if the controller is able to set the drive to non-raid. Perhaps, do you have any other drives to test? I just want to make sure that you're familiar with the server, then only you can proceed to make a purchase.

Hi, okay to get a couple of 1.6TB (or less) PCIe SSDs PN# listed in your database. Thank you. Yes, i was able to install Windows Server 2016, i even tried with a Linux distribution, but same problem, i can install it but not boot on it. Thanks
