PowerEdge T110 - Problem adding ATI Radeon X300 graphical card

Hi,

I have a PowerEdge T110 server with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed. I added following graphical card to the server : 128 MB PCI Express x16 ATI Radeon X300 SE DVI/VGA - TV (which I took from my older Dimension 8400 desktop computer).
The problem is that my PowerEdge server doesn't recognize this card. How do I need to proceed to make this work? I searched on the internet for a driver for this card that works on WinServer 2008, but couldn't find one. I tried already several driver utility programs (driver detective, driver genius, driver update, ...) but these programs only look for upgrades for existing drivers, and since there is no driver installed for the card these programs can't solve my problem.

Thanks for any help.

Dave,

The T110 won't recognize the card without first disabling the embedded video controller. Hit F2 for the BIOS, then Integrated Devices. Then disable Embedded Video Controller.

In order to have the ability to disable the controller, you have to have the card installed.

Hi,

Thanks for the really fast response. I followed your advise and now the T110 recognizes the card.

But I think I still need to install some ATI Radeon X300 driver to be able to choose the right resolution. My screen is a Dell 1704FP 17" UltraSharpTM Flat Panel Monitor and the resolution should be set to 1680x1050. Currently, I'm only able to choose a max resolution of 1280x1024. Could you help me with this one again?

Thanks,

Dave

I downloaded and installed the Catalyst Control Center (drivers included) from www.adm.com.
It works perfectly!

Thanks for the fast respons!

Did you try downloading and installing the driver of the videocard? ati.com is a place to start.

Hi, my name is Marcus and I'm from Brazil.

I have the same problem: I followed your advise and  is impossible to disable Embedded Video Controller, the only option is Standard and is unavaliable.

Conclusion: PowerEdge T110 II doesn't recognize this card (256 MB PCI Express x16 ATI Radeon X300 SE )

Thanks for any help.

The T110 II Hardware Owners Manual states on page 29 (Integrated Devices Screen) that the embedded video controller field can be disabled only if an add-in video card is present. If this field is disabled, remote access features such as virtual KVM are not available.

It is not clear from the HOM table 6-2 on page 121 whether slot 2 which is described as 'full length' is indeed a x16 slot with 8 lanes available, but as you have access to the hardware that's an easy check.

So, install the x16 PCIe graphics card in slot 2, then jump into bios and change Embedded Video Controller field from STANDARD (the default) to DISABLED, save the BIOS changes and restart the machine. Now you will be able to load the video drivers specific to your video card from within the OS itself..

Just be warned that these machines aren't designed to support video cards, these are imposed PCIe slot power limits due to heat dissipation issues, the power supply does not have a graphics card PEG connector and if your using a server OS graphics drivers may not be available for your card. But if you use a low power card, likely you wont have any issues.

Because the power limits, I don't install the second video card.

Thank's a lot!

The DELL VT 5450 2GB DDR3 PCI EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD works well in PowerEdge T110 II,

I was refurbishing an R415 Server with Windows Server 2008R2.  The video was so slow that even using the Dell Support WebSite to download drivers was painful.  I found an old ATI X300 PCIE card that fit perfectly in the expansion slot.  I downloaded and installed the ATI Catalyst Suite for Windows Vista 64 (that was the closest they had).  I rebooted into the setup and disabled the onboard Matrox video, rebooted and it came up on the new ATI card.  No problems.  The difference is night and day.  This server is now running great.  Surfing the Dell Support website is just like any other system now.  The 2D only support of the onboard Matrox Video really makes this server seem inadequate.  The video upgrade breaths ne life into a 5 year old server.  Dual Opterons, 16GB RAM, Raid 5 with 4X 500GB Hot Swap Drives.
