PowerEdge T420 - Installing Hyper-V on to SD Card option

What size SD Card would I need for the installation of Windows Sever Core 2012 ?

Are there any instruction on how to install Windows Server Core 2012 on to an SD Card for the Dell PowerEdge T420 ?

It is just the Hypervisor part that gets installed on to the SD Card. I have had it confirmed by Dell that it is supported, but I can’t speak to Tech Support until I have bought the Server which is a bit of a pain.

I have seen this scenario with in a VMware solution, where the Hardware just boots via the SD Card and then starts a required VMs. I would just like to do that using the Microsoft Hyper-V.

If you could install it to an SD card, it would have to be more than 32gb

*Be aware that 32 GB should be considered an absolute minimum value for successful installation. The system partition will need extra space for any of the following circumstances:

⦁       If you install the system over a network.

⦁       Computers with more than 16 GB of RAM will require more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files.

But it is not a supported option by either Microsoft or Dell.

Hope this answers your question.

VMware is a much smaller OS with a lot lower system requirements (IO/space/memory wise). This is why it can run off of a 1GB SD card.

The nature of Microsoft Windows (or hyper-v server (trimmed down version of Windows Server)) has much higher system requirements in regards to disk space and IO capabilities. This is why nobody wants to support this.

I would really like the Dell hardware solution along with a full Microsoft solution. I have found an article that someone had put Hyper-V Server 2012 on to a 16Gb USB Stick (rmlinar.net/.../hyper-v-server-2012-from-a-usb-stick), at the bottom of the article it suggests that Dell may not support this unless I purchase a USB Stick with Hyper-V Sever 2012 installed on to it.

I am wondering if Dell would be able to supply Hyper-V Server 2012 installed on to an SD Card for the Dell PowerEdge T420.

From what I've seen, Dell will not support or sell a solution where a Microsoft OS is installed on anything other than a harddrive or SSD.
