Based on your description, I would expect it to be a PCI card. That having been said, if you want to share either a Tech Support Report or the output of lspci -v, it would provide a good place for us to start.
I have checked the PCIe slots and there is nothing in the physical locations, so I decided to do a Firmware Update using the Lifecycle Controller but after choosing the components to update I receive the below error message.
Unable to install the update packages (SUP0531)
Recommended action :
Enter another repository location that has the Update Packages and retry the operation.
I tried several times and rebooted the Server, and changes it IP address - and also performed the connection test from the controller which said it was successful but all updates failed.
If the slot is empty, it's possible there could be a board/riser issue preventing the slot from being scanned. The logs I mentioned above would also show if the system thinks there is something populated in that slot, even if it is actually empty. You can also try shutting the server off, unplugging it, then holding the power down for 30 seconds. The goal being to make the server reacquire the hardware inventory.
OK thanks I will try that next time I am onsite- but I also tried updating the firmware using the Server Configurator which failed with results below:
Attempt to connect to FTP Server connection successful Browse downloads from FTP Server and select Firmware packages to be downloaded then it all failed with error code - Error "Unable to install the upgrade packages: (SUP0531)
I will try a hard power down and the procedure you outlined next time I am onsite to see if that helps.
Update - Contacted Dell Pro Support here in Australia and exported the logs from the iDrac card and diagnosed the issue to be a non-Dell HBA card installed at SLOT 5 which is causing the boot issues.
So it looks like the Adaptec HBA card was installed by a previous technician and has been causing issues since- so now I will go back on site and remove the card and test as required.

Hi,

Unable to install the update packages (SUP0531)
Recommended action :

I tried several times and rebooted the Server, and changes it IP address - and also performed the connection test from the controller which said it was successful but all updates failed.
The updates included:
Dell OS driver Pack: 18.11.00
BIOS: 2.8.0
Broadcom BCM5720 GB NIC: 21.40.2
PERC H730: 25.5.5.005
Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller: 2.61.60.60
Not sure what why I couldnt access the FTP site as the internet and all other network services were running okay.
So now it looks like I am back to square 1.
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers
Anthony
