Poweredge 1950 v1 processor support

The PDF from dell says 5100 series and 5300 series for v1, and v3 supports up to 5400 series. However there's reports of 5300 series cpu's not being supported in v1. If that's the case, can I drop a III series motherboard into a first gen 1950, or are there other physical changes to the system that would prevent that from working? I'd like the 5400 series, but at minimum I need quad cores, which 5100 series doesn't offer if that's the only series supported.

1950 v1 servers will only support 5100 series CPUs.

1950 v2 servers will support 5100 and 5300 series CPUs.

1950 v3 servers will support 5100, 5300, and 5400 series CPUs.

If you want to convert a v1 into a v3, all you have to do is change the motherboard.  1950s are so cheap nowaways, you can probably buy a 1950 v3 with CPUs for about the same pirce as just the motherboard and avoid having to do the upgrade.

Thanks for the info. It's a home lab that I play with 3x 1950 III's, and just picked up 2x 1950 v1's for $25 each. I looked at ebay and found III mobo's for $25 shipped, and have spare xeon 5400 cpu's already, so that would put me at $50 per server.

Upgrading to the R series would be nice, but still expensive and considering the 1950's barely break 50% cpu usage, i don't have a "need" for something more powerful right now. It's a failover cluster, but no machine has ever failed. Mainly use it for live migrations so I can pull boxes and upgrade ram or what not without taking virtual machines offline.

I would also consider upgrading to a newer system.  The R610 servers are also coming down in price and offer the option of 6-core CPUs, more memory, and more drives.

Here is a good link if you want to compare different Dell server models.  It lists features and pricing.

$50 for a server is perfect for a home lab.

Finally found a PE2950 with 2.5" bays for a reasonable price, so I can drop the hp dl360. 5 1950's, 2 2950's, and a couple supermicro's. Everything is dual quad core with 16+gb ram and didn't pay over $100 for any of them
