Poweredge 2550, issues upgrading CPU
Hi all,
I have two Poweredge servers, a 1650 and a 2550. The 2550 currently has dual 1GHz P3 cpus. The 1650 has 1.4GHz p3's in it. I want to swap the CPU's between the two systems. Yesterday I attempted to install the 1.4GHz cpus into the 2550. I did everything according to the processor install guide for this system. When I attempt to boot the system it does not get video. Two green lights turn on, on the front of the system and all the fans turn on but thats it. After about 5 minutes an orange light comes on. If I reinstall the 1GHz cpus the system works fine. If I reinstall the 1.4GHz cpus back into the 1650 it works fine. For some reason the 2550 wont accept the 1.4GHz cpus. As far as I know the 2550 fully supports the 1.4GHz p3. The 2550 is updated to the latest A09 BIOS. I have not tried installing the 1GHz cpus into the 1650 yet.
I am not sure what else to try in order to troubleshoot this issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Greg

I'm not sure but I don't think they're compatible. When we upgraded our 1650s and 2550s we had to order two different CPUs for each. Get the specific CPU identification and check on the Intel website to see if they are supposed to be compatible.
The next issue would be that the BIOS can't identify the new CPU because it never was designed to support it.

thanks for the response! I did not realize that the 2550 only supported certain versions of the p3 1.4. I know that 2550's did ship with the 1.4 as an option. If its not compatible its not the end of the world. I am guessing its just not going to work as Ive done just about all the troubleshooting one can do for an issue like this. Resetting BIOS, tried swapping the 1.4s between slots. I did not try a single cpu yet, but I really dont think that will make a difference. I even tried a new BIOS battery just in case.
Thanks again.
