Poweredge 2900 Series III CPU Upgrade

What is the list of CPU's that a Poweredge 2900 can be upgraded with? How many?

The Harpertown x5460 was the fastest tested processor for this server; Harpertown Processor  Part # N856G SVC,PRC,X5460,1333,XDH,E-STNP.  Anything beyond that was untested by Dell.  As theflash1932 explained, you will need to have matching processors and the system will need to be completely updated.

Assuming it is actually a 2900 III and the BIOS is up to date (2.7.0), you can upgrade both processors to the 5400-family of Xeon processors (processors MUST match):

http://ark.intel.com/compare/35430,34447,34446,33929,33927,33091,33090,33088,33087,33085,33084,33083,33082,33081,33080,33079

A couple of things:

The original specs for the 2900 III says:

  • up to 3.16GHz
  • 1066MHz or 1333MHz FSB
  • Xeon 5400 2x6MB (12MB) Cache

These specs may or may not be deal-breakers, but the BIOS updates do not address them specifically - just simply "new"/"newer" 5400 processors.  So the safe processors (meeting the above criteria) would be:

http://ark.intel.com/compare/33087,34446,33083,33082,33091,33081,33929,33927,33090,33080,33079

Again, these processors should meet any/all criteria for upgrading the 2900 III, but the higher power processors in the first link "may" work as well.  The 1600MHz FSB CPU's are probably the least likely to work - the 3.33GHz processors will "most likely" work even if the speed is not specifically supported.
