Poweredge T110 II not working with a KVM

I recently acquired a pair of Poweredge T110 II servers.  I first tried to connect them to my KVM (electronic) but I get no video signal through it.  I disconnected the video cable from the KVM and connected it directly to the video output and it works fine.  Is the video output from the server really weak and not work with a KVM?  Should I add a video card?  I really like to use the KVM so when I am loading something on one machine, I can switch to a different one and continue to work.

Hi,

I have not heard that PowerEdge T110 II wouldn't work on a KVM.

What cable does the KVM use? Straight VGA without any conversion?

There is no known recommended video card for T110, but if you have a card lying around, give it a try to test if it's the on board VGA is the root cause.

I installed an ATI Radeon 3450 video card with the vga adapter and that did not help.  The video card works just fine, it also is not recognized by the KVM.

My KVM is the digital kind that has 2 LEDs per station, one to identify an active machine and the other to identify which station active.  I started the boot process blind and then pause the boot up, switched to one of the active stations then switched video cables and the video for the T110 II showed on the screen.  I then moved the keyboard cable and mouse cable to their new location and was able to work on the T110 II.  The LED for that station that shows the active machine went out after a short time but the KVM doesn't switch unless you press the button.  It would not switch back when moved off that station.

I have KVM cables that have the video, keyboard and mouse (ps2) and cables that are all separate.  None of them work with the T110 II.  They all work with all of the other machines that I have in the line up.

Other machines that I have in line are a custom built Asus i7, custom built Asus Athlon64 x2, custom built Epox AMD XP, HP dc7900, Dell Optiplex 3000, custom built Epox K6-2 550 and 486.  Other machines are added and subtracted as needed, some of these are Dell PowerEdge 2300, 2400, 4400, Optiplex 745, 755.

I will pull out my second T110 II and try it and see if it is the same as the first one.

I am assuming that the KVM picks up a signal or power from the cables to identify which station has an active computer on it.  Some of the machines show an active signal even when powered down and others do not.  They all show active within seconds of powering on if not instantly.

Hi,

I gave a check on the BIOS properties, the server seems to be at basic configuration, and it doesn't have any video property settings to configure.

Try the second T110 II if it's the same issue.

Also, I'm unsure on the properties of the KVM that you are using, could it be there is too much connections to it? Have you tried disconnect most of your systems from the KVM except the T110 II to perform troubleshooting?

Right now there are only 3 machines connected to the KVM, the i7, the 64x2, the AMD XP and still no joy.

Update, I think I have discovered why it won't see the active monitor.  I now believe the kvm sees the activity from the keyboard and not the video.  I believe the kvm sees some computers when they are off because their motherboards might be set to be powered on by the keyboard, hence it is sending signals to the keyboard when off.

I did try the second T110 II and still the same as the first, most likely because the kvm doesn't support usb keyboards.  I have found some usb to ps2 adapters on amazon, I am going to get a few and try them out and see if that helps out with the kvm.

On to my next problem, the 3 sas drives that I bought for this won't connect.  The cables all go to the motherboard and they don't fit the hard drives.  The drives look like they have a single connection that is both power and sata.  Not sure if removing the little piece of plastic between the two connection points would allow it to work with the onboard controller.  I think it was either set up with sata drives or the sas controller was removed.  Both servers had the top blank plate removed leading me to believe that some card was removed.

I set the sata to ahci and install a spare 500gb sata (desktop) hard drive to load ubuntu server on to play around with it will I figure out the sas problem.
