Poweredge T320 RAM mixing questions

I have a T320 and some spare memory modules.

The T320 currently has 2 x 8GB (Samsung part no M393B1G70BH0-YK0)

This is actually confusing already since that RAM module has speed of 1600 MHz, but the idrac sais 1333 MHz, (***?) maybe anyone can clarify this? Is the idrac output wrong?

Can I, and if yes how, mix those two existing modules with:

- another 2 x 8GB (Samsung part no M393B1G70BH0-YK0)

- 2 x 4GB (Samsung part no M378B5273DH0-CH9)

- 2 x 32GB (DELL part no SNPM9FKFC/32G)

How is mixing memory in the poweredges in general?

Thanks for any help!

Preexo,

The reason you are seeing 1333, when the dimm is a 1600, is due to it being a Low Voltage dimm. On the T320 the standard DIMM voltage of 1.5 V supports speeds up to 1600 MHz, where the Low-voltage (1.35 V) supports speeds up to 1333 MHz. So because it is a Low Voltage the system will flag it at 1333 MHz.

As far as the dimms go, you should be able to use the 8GB and the 32GB (as long as bios is up to date and current), but you wouldn't be able to use the 4GB Samsungs. This is due to the other dimms being Rdimms and the Samsungs 4GB  are Udimms. Which can't be mixed together.

Now with the 4x 8GB and the 2 x 32gb you will need to increase the number of 32GB dimms by 1, or remove 2 of the 4GB. This is due to the memory channels, seen below, need to match.

So if you go to 3 x 32GB dimms you can place them in A1-A3, and then place the 8GB in A4-A6.

The other option would be to place 32gb in A1 and A2, and 8GB dimms in A4 and A5. Leaving A3 and A6 empty.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you Chris for this thoroughly answer!

So, how can I increase the voltage on my T320 somehow to get the dimms up to 1600 MHz? Or will they allways stay with the low-voltage of 1.35V on any of my T320?

You would need to change dimms. it isn't a matter of a voltage setting. The dimms themselves run at the low voltage, not the server specifically. So if it is those specific dimms, it will occur on any of the systems you move them to, with that limitation.

Chris,

I know this is not a dell 'recommended' cfg but will this application, single file/sml sql server cause an issue? and other questions below about A4-A5.

RAM: same 1333, same LV, same RDIMM

I would like to configure my system:

A1 - 16GB

A2 - 8GB

A3 - 8GB

Any disadvantage? Will the server have an issue?

CPU: Single Xeon E5-2420 v2

2. What, if any, would be an advantage to my server using A4 and A5? ( my boss, would prefer the above cfg) I do understand more RAM is better for a DB but wondering  what ,if any is the advantage cfg below?

A1 - 16GB

A4 - 8GB

A2 - 16GB

A5 - 8GB

If just a larger capacity or minimal speed gains for the DB then using the black slots would not be used.

Option 1 is fine and is optimal.

Option 2 is not optimal and may elicit a warning or error.

The memory guidelines instruct to populate the white-lever slots first - populate in numerical order 1 to 6.

Memory sizes can be mixed.

Because A1/A4, A2/A5, and A3/A6 are three different channels, there is an advantage to populating each channel, then doubling up after that.
