There are three revisions of the system board. The V1 system board ONLY supports 4100 series CPUs. Since the system is telling you to install a 4100 series I suspect you have a V1 board. To use 4200 series you need either a V2 or V3 system board.
If you get the part or PPID number off of the board or by using one of the Openmanage applications I can verify which board you have.
Not sure this is the PPID, CN-0GXH08-71703-0AF-0304-A01.
Yes, that is the PPID. The part # is GXH08. That is a first revision system board. You will need to replace the system board with either a V2 or V3 system board to use 4200 series processors. The V3 board added support for 4300 series, and all revisions of the board are backwards compatible. Support for 4100 series was not deprecated from any of the later revisions, so you should only gain from upgrading the board.
If you decide to replace the board then the V2 or V3 board should have V2 or V3 clearly stated in the description of the board. Any board that does not specify V2 or V3 is a V1 board.
1. BIOS updates are generally for every server of that model. That being said, I still took a look at the BIOS update and saw nothing that would indicate to me that V1 and V2 boards would not be supported by the update.
2. I'm seeing several different part numbers. I'll just share a couple of each. V2: 8WNM9, HDD71 V3: 6GP9J, R3CK0
P.S. Maybe you could post the full list of model numbers for future reference? This would help people shopping for replacement system boards, assuming BIOS updates don't add 4300 series CPU support to all of them. I've had no luck tracking down info on the model numbers, not even with the search feature on Dell support.
But my first question was whether *CPU* support is affected by the BIOS update. E.g. after updating to 2.4.1, does a V1 board still only support 4100 series and V2 only 4200 series as indicated above? Or would a V1 or V2 board with the latest BIOS support a 4300 series CPU?
Regarding the second question, do you see part #YFWR8 listed? If so, is it V1, V2, or V3?
The part numbers change, so there really wouldn't be any long term use in doing so. A user would need to contact Sales in that situation.
As for clarity in regard to CPU support changing, Im not seeing anything to indicate that boards will lose support for any CPUs by updating BIOS firmware.
I'm referring only to the R415 system boards. The system board part numbers for a discontinued server should be fixed, right?
Regarding CPUs, I'm referring to support being added, not removed. I found this link indicating that 4300 series support was added by BIOS update 2.0.2:
However, I just confirmed that it does not help with the GXH08 boards. I tried an Opteron 4386 in a server with a GXH08 and got the "Please install a 4100 series processor" message.
Thanks - the remaining question is what are all the part numbers for R415 V2 and V3 boards? E.g., is YFWR8 a V1, V2, or V3? I've had no luck tracking this info down despite a lot of effort. eBay sellers are generally good about listing the system board part #, but I haven't found any way to determine what version the board is given the part number, aside from the partial list provided in this thread.

A couple of clarifications, if anyone knows:
1. Does the latest BIOS (2.4.1) affect CPU support for V1 and V2 boards?
2. What other model numbers are there for V2 and V3 boards? I'm seeing a lot of YFWR8 boards out there in particular.
Thanks,
Jason

I partly answered my own question by examining my existing servers. I can confirm that both the 8WNM9 (V2) and YFVT1 (V3) support the Opteron 4386.
The questions still remaining in my mind:
1. What processors are supported by the GXH08 and YFWR8 with the latest BIOS?
2. Are there other model numbers not yet mentioned, and if so, what processors do they support?

The V2 and V3 motherboards support 4200 and 4300 series processors.
4200 procs: 4226, 4228 HE, 4234, 4238, 4256 EE, 4274 HE, 4280, 4284
4300 procs: 4386, 4376 HE, 4340, 4334, 4332 HE, 4310 EE
The V2 and V3 boards of different part numbers also support these boards. The notes do not indicate any change of processor support with BIOS updates.
I mistook your model number question for a part number request.
