R540 High Performance Fan Part Number + sixth fan
Hi,
I have the R540 12 drive version with single CPU, and upon installing the 2 x 3.5" rear backplane the fans are at 100% 24x7.
I understand this configuration requires high performance fans, but I am having real trouble actually finding the part number and the parts themselves. This server also came with five fans, and I understand only a second CPU requires the sixth fan, but is that also the case here?
So three questions:
What is the part number for an R540 compatible high performance fan?
With a single CPU + rear backplane do I still only require five fans, or a sixth as well?
Do I need to change the heatsink to a 1U from a 1.5U in the above configuration. Will this affect fan speed?
Thanks!

Hello Eor360,
The part number Young provided is correct. You can compare the two fan part numbers:
PN#H3H8Y - ASSY Fan Standard, 60X60X38MM, 12V
PN#N74R6 - Assy High Performance Fan, 60MMX38MM, 12V,(for 3.5"X12+2 rear HDD config, R540)
These part numbers are Service part numbers. You can contact Sales and ask for the Spare Parts Department for a quote.

as far as i know, there are not different models of fans for the server. just one type of fan.
There are probably different dell part numbers but that is just for what kit you are buying the fan in (i.e. buying cpu 2 install kit fan+heatsink etc)
There is only 1 actual type of fan, and it looks like it is a SUNON vf60381b1-q080-s9h from the pictures which is a High Speed 18K rpm fan
You installed a new part, the server does not have a cooling profile for that specific device, so it ramped up the fans.
2 things could cause this:
1: You are missing or have outdated firmware / BIOS.
-Update the firmware and BIOS. Boot into the lifecycle controller with F10, go to updates, go to HTTPS, and have it automatically fetch and install all relevant updates
2: The device is not 'officially' supported
-if option 1 doesnt work, try running a hardware diagnostics/ self check with the lifecycle controller to make sure there isnt a module misbehaving or not showing up properly to cause this.
If all else fails, you can try using ipmi commands

Besides what you've posted above, I cannot find any information on N74R6 being high performance fans, and cannot find anywhere to purchase.
I have purchased from two places, and in both instances they were 0H3H8Y standard fans. It seems this part doesn't exist anywhere that I can find.
Can you provide further information on the R540 high performance fan?

Thank you for replying! Everything was out of date so that was helpful.
Hardware diagnostics passed and everything looks okay, so I am inching closer to ipmi it seems.
Dell are sending me some high performance fans so we'll see if they're any different; everything I've found supports what you've said above.
