R540 shutsdown seconds after power up

Hi all I have a new R540 which I have been using for the past few months not extensively. I moved the CPU to have a look, after connecting back (i unscrewed and then **bleep** back back carefully), the system acts strange. It starts with fans spinning, for few seconds, and then goes down. I was following this link got " No Post "which says removed all the peripherals one by one to isolate the error however no luck: https://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/sln111201/dell-poweredge-troubleshooting-a-server-that-does-not-start-no-power-no-post-or-no-boot-?lang=en Would appreciate your feed back Thanks

Hello

The CPU is required for POST. If the issue started after you removed and reinstalled the CPU then I would suspect a CPU issue. The CPU may not have been installed correctly.

Troubleshooting a no POST issue involves taking the system to minimum to POST, like the article states. If the issue persists at minimum to POST then you start replacing the remaining hardware. If all that you did was remove the CPU and reinstall it then I would go through that process again and make sure it is installed correctly. If you removed the heat sink from the CPU then you should remove the old thermal grease and apply new thermal grease.

If the heat sink is not making good contact with the CPU then a thermal event can be triggered very quickly. A CPU can overheat and cause a thermal shutdown in a couple of seconds without proper heat dissipation. You can find instructions for removing hardware in the system manual on the support page. If there are instructions for removing the CPU they will be in the manual.
