R720 - V1 to V2 CPU upgrade

Hi,

Our client has an R720 with two E5-2630 CPUs and they were talking to us about the possibility of changing out the processors to E5-2660v2 CPUs. I was wondering if this is even possible to keep the same machine and if there were any possible updates to the motherboard that would allow this? Also, would it require different heatsinks?

Thanks!

Jboyernhr,

The R720 platform will only support up to 8 cores, 16 threads per CPU.  The new E5-2660 v2 is a 10 core, 20 thread processor.  The Intel Sandy Bridge only supports 8 cores; the new E5-2660 v2 is for the Ivy Bridge; the details are found here: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%20E5-2660%20v2.html

Huh? I work with a R720 that has two E5-2697 v2s ... thats'a a total of 24 cores, 48 threads.

Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge is designed to be a drop in replacement if the BIOS supports it (big if).

Some people tried an Ivy Bridge CPU on a Precision T3600, which only comes with Sandy Bridge CPUs, it did not work. So who knows
