R720 iDrac dedicated port not working (using enterprise license)

Hiya,

The dedicated iDrac port on my R720 has suddenly stopped working (no lights or traffic). I have currently set iDrac to one of the LOMs, so that I can at least have access to the system.

After opening up the server, I see that the port is built onto the motherboard, which means replacing it is out of the question.

So my question is;

Can I buy a separate iDrac 7 card (the 2827M) and use it as a dedicated NIC for iDrac and if so, will it be able to power the system on and off without the server being on?

Alternatively, can I get an idrac9 card and use it for the same purpose. I'll have to upgrade my license if so, which is not a huge deal.

Here are the screenshots of my system

Hi, with this model, idrac LAN port is onboard, So if that is broken, you are most likely to have to replace the motherboard.

Hi Shine,

Yes I did remove the power cables and hold the power button for about a minute. No joy.

2827M need a dedicated slot and this card is not supported on R720. This card supported only on specific servers. iDRAC 9 card is not backward compatible and can not be installed on R720.

Can you AC power cycle the server (Shutdown and remove the power cable and connect it back after few minutes) and see whether dedicated port is coming back?

Any idea what my options are? I do need the ability to remote manage this server.

Hi again Shine,

Yes, all configs are good. I did try different ports and cables as well as resetting to default and configuring from scratch. No dice, unfortunately.

Looks like I'm SOL.

How much would a replacement MB set me back? Ballpark figure to see if it's really worth the effort.

Cheers!

I just came across a post that said to reset a jumper (image attached). Do you think this might help?68747470733a2f2f64656c6c2e746f2f3370354a594570.png

Reset jumper is used to reset BIOS settings to default. I do not believe this will help here. You can give a try as you seen this solution on another post.

If dedicated port is not working then you need to replace the motherboard as iDRAC Dedicated port is integrated to the motherboard. Did you tried connecting another cable or port to dedicated port to ensure it is not a cable or network issue. Can you also confirm all network configurations are good with iDRAC. I will also recommend to reset iDRAC settings to default and reconfigure it.

May I ask how I check the MB model number? I've looked at the system inventory but all I could gather were the board part number and serial number. A quick Google search yielded no usable results.

Also, can I use my current enterprise license with the new board? That's important.

Hi for both questions, we will need your service tag. Please DM one of us with the service tag (and provide us the original post link so that we can know what you are referring to), instead of exposing it in public.

Ah cheers for that.

So, will I be able to reuse my licence on the new MB?
