R730 single 128gb RAM stick upgrade
Hi!
I've purchased single stick of Samsung DDR4 RDIMM 128gb with intentions of upgrading my R730 - currently 2x E5-2670v3 and 4x 16GB of Hynix RDIMM (slots A1, A2, B1, B2). With Samsung memory in any of the valid configurations (slot A3, B3 or even in A1) boot process gets stuck on "Loading BIOS drivers" and post code 0x4. When inserted into any other slot - A9 for example, system boots fine into OS with "DIMM populated out of order" info but additional RAM is not visible in OS nor in iDRAC. Both BIOS and iDRAC are fully updated (2.12.1 and 2.80.80.80 respectively). Exact memory models are:
Samsung: M393AAK40B42-CWD6Q
Hynix: HMA42GR7MFR4N-TF
I even tested Samsung stick in other system (Asus C422 PRO/SE with xeon W-2133) and it works fine. What might be the cause of this?

In our database, I found only HMABAGL7M4R4N-VN & HMABAGL7M4R4N-UL as 128 GB Modules for the R730.
You could wait for an Update from Firmware that could solve it.
Because normally we update this to adding more compatibility.
But I could not guarantee this to you when this happens.

Hi, thanks for choosing Dell. Different vendors don’t mean different parts numbers. I’m assuming as long as it has the same specification you could use it.
Memory bus operating frequency can be 1333 MT/s, 1600 MT/s, 1866 MT/s, or 2133 MT/s depending on the following factors:

Hi,
please rebuild your original config and update your system.
This could solve the problem.

Exactly, it should not be a problem, even if Samsung stick is rated for 2666mhz - it should just slow down to 2133 and work fine, but it doesn't. Boot process gets stuck on "Loading BIOS drivers" and post code 0x4 in iDRAC even though stick works fine in other machine...
It happens in all of the "valid" memory configs, no matter if I make it:
A1, A2, B1, B2 - hynix ; A3/B3/A4/B4 - Samsung
A1 - hynix ; B2 - Samsung
A1 - Samsung ; B2 - Hynix
When i try to use only the samsung stick (in A1) boot gets stuck on "Configuring memory" and the same 0x4 post code.

The system is fully usable with original 4x 16gb config, i just really want to make use of the 128gb stick i bought. Also as I stated in original post, everything is fully updated.
