R910 extra hdd bays
My Dell ™ PowerEdge ™ R910 has only 1 hard drive bay with 4 disks.
The HDD bay is connected with a short black flat cable.
I would like to install and connect a second, third and fourth hard disk bay but there are no further connections on the motherboard and I also have no additional cables to connect the hard disk bays.
I cannot find an explanation or a parts list about this anywhere.
Who has experience with this and tell me something about connecting the components.

Hello,
The R910 storage subsystem should have a backplane that connects to a storage controller, such as a PERC. When you say 1 hard drive bay, can you confirm that the backplane is what you're referencing? I'm not trying to be pedantic, but I want to make sure that our thinking is aligned.
Provided that's the case, we do have a 16 drive backplane. It would be a case of replacing the current backplane with a larger one. The 16 drive backplane's part number is J565K. The SAS cables would route back to the PERC, and the part numbers for those are R622N and Y100N. The backplane power cable would be C859K, but you should have that already. The PERC should either be an H700 or an H200, and every model that I looked at had 2 connectors, so you should be good there, but I'll list their part numbers anyway.
PERC H700 - 1THG8
PERC H700i - 39H7H
PERC H200 - 3J8FW and H215J
Hopefully, this helps out!

Hi,
Thank you for the quick answer.
For the cable, I'm talking about the SAS cable that connects the backplane to the PERC. At the moment, I have the 4 drives backplane which is connected to the PERC with the cable R622N. This cable already include that other smaller cable that connect the cache battery to the PERC. If I replace that backplane with a 16 drives backplane, I need a second SAS cable. I think the normal cable to use is Y100N which appears to be the same as the precedent one, but without that smaller battery cable (because I don't need a second battery cable).
I found that this cable is around 130$ - 200$, but the first one with that battery cable included is around 30-70$. So I was wondering if that included battery cable is the only difference between those two cable, or is there something I am missing.
Thank you,

Hello,
Those parts, 0J565K and J565K, they'll be the same component. As for the cable question, I believe the cable you mentioned is the I2C cable. If that is correct, then it is the cable that would provide LED functionality to the backplane. If you are correct and it is just for a battery, then you would just not be able to use controller cache, since there would be no power connection.

Hi,
I have the same replacement to make for my server. I looked on the internet to see where I can get the parts and found that there is another backplane very similar. The part number is 0J565K instead of J565K.
Is there any difference between the part 0J565K and J565K, or is it the same part?
I also noticed that the cable Y100N is a lot more expensive than the cable R622N, which include the battery cable. Is there any downside of a second R622N cable instead of the Y100N cable beside having an unused battery cable?
Thanks,

I have the same R910. What do you figure the cost of the other 12 drive bays are minus the drives? Also do you know the drive size max you can go per slot?
