That shouldn't work, but populating them in 1,2,3 should work. If the memory is the same type(UDIMM/RDIMM) then you should also be able to put the 4GB DIMMs in 4,5,6.

Would leaving 4,5 and 6 empty have any ill effect?
No, I was just letting you know you could use them in case you weren't aware.

I looked at the diagram wrong. I meant 1,2 and 3. Thanks.
