Replacing drive in Raid 1

Hello,

I have a PE R720 that has a failed drive on it.  It is part of the OS partition, RAID 1.  The tech tells me I can just pop that drive out and replace with the new one, that the server already doesn't recognize it as part of the array.  I have always held the belief that you never pull a drive out of a RAID 1 array, whether it's failed or not.  That there is a process I need to follow to replace this drive.  Things that come to mind are 'Clearing Foreign Config' and using OMSA to 'Replace Member Disk'.

Could anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks!

Kbeau,

The only times you would need to Clear the Foreign is if the drive is flagged as a Foreign. If the drive is Online, then I would go to the controller and Force Offline the drive you wish to replace. If the drive is offline, then you can simply remove it and insert the replacement. Using the Replace Member service will remove the existing Hotpsare, if used, and then it will rebuild the replacement driver.

Let me know if this helps.
