SC 420 Random Restart (Windows XP Pro)
Hello everyone,
I'd like to start this post regarding my SC420 randomly restarting itself every 2 hours or so.
I bought this box (SC420, 512Mb RAM)from Dell late Dec 2004. One week later on I on modded the PCIExpress slot to make it work with the Radeon x300 PCI Express bought from Newegg. I then upgraded the RAM to 1GB (another $150 = 2x256 from Dell). The machine works flawlessly for 1 year, until last Thursday night (Feb 16, 06). Before, I left the box on 24/7 and nothing would happen. I'm running XP Pro SP2 and typically I just have Web design applications (Apache, MySQL, PHP) and Office running for local use (I bought the box because it's a server and it doesn't come with Window$, I have my own copy already to save me $200)
It started to restart itself and WindowsXP, after submitting the "serious error" back to Microsoft, told me the error is "DEVICE THREAD STUCK IN A LOOP" or something like that (I will post the exact error message the next time it happens.) I don't think this is an overheating problem because the box has been running fine for more or less a year. I have checked the fans and everything works well. The powersupply shouldn't be a problem either (same rational). The memory is not a problem either as I use Dell's ECC RAM only.
I have yet come to any conclusion yet but I'm posting here to see if anyone run into the same problem.
Cheers,
Alex

Beware of Dell 400SC bulged and failing capacitors

Quite scary (and dissapointing) don't you think? I wonder if the SC420 ever uses the same motherboard as the 400SC. Hopefully not.
