SC1430 server failure
Hello,
I have a Dell SC1430 dual processor server that died recently showing error indicator lights 1&2 (possible system board failure). I replaced the system board and it would boot into the OS then shutdown. I noticed the power supply fan would turn off so replaced the power supply. Then it stayed on abit longer but still shutsdown. I ran the Dell diagnostics and found the system fails and shuts down when running the APIC MP test (all other processor diagnostics pass). When it begins the 4th pass on the APIC MP test the cooling fans kick in at high speed and it immediately shuts down.
It seems clear that I need to replace one or both of the processors but wanted to put this out there in case there may be another, or possibly different solution. As this is the third time ordering parts in attempt to "revive" this machine is there other components I should test?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
Regards,
David

Hi Trish,
When the replacement system board was in there were no error lights indicated and the system would still shut down indicating a thermal error on the startup display which lead to the power supply replacement.
I determined that one of the processors is faulty by the process you suggested and now that it's out the server runs fine although now on a single processor.
Thanks much for the feedback and advice.

It seems one of the SATA II hard drives was blown out along with 1 processor, the system board and the power supply. It's an 8 year old hard drive with only 80GB and to get a used replacement is relatively expensive against buying a new hard drive.
Can anyone recommend an alternative new hard drive that will work with an SC1430 server? It's a 3.5 inch form factor and 80GB is plenty for what it's being used for but it seems more prudent to spend the same money on a brand new drive rather than an old used one.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Hi again,
I've finally purchased 2 new hard drives for the SC1430 (same make and model) but the bios doesn't recognize them. It's actually SATA port 1 doesn't recognize the new drives or the existing primary drive if I connect it to port 1. The new drives are recognized on port 0.
This is on a replacement system board and I'm wondering if there is possibly a pin setting on the system board or another bios setting that has to be configured in order to run a second drive?
Any advice is appreciated.
Regards,
David
