SCSI Tape - Archive Python 06408-xxx - Drive Not Ready Error
Hi,
I have a PowerEdge 2600 (about 1-1/2 yrs old) running Win2K3 SP1 (up to date on patches), and Backup Exec v9.1 (purchased from Dell). Starting a couple of weeks ago, I started having tape backup issues. In the System Event Log, I'm seeing multiple recordings of Event ID: 15, source adpu160m - The device \Device\Scsi\adpu160m1, is not ready for access yet. These will start and then continue being logged at approximately 30 second intervals.
I checked and the driver for the Adaptec 39160 adapter was a Microsoft driver dated in 2002. I then checked the Adaptec web site, and their most recent update was released in 2004, so I downloaded and updated the driver. That did not help.
Next I completely uninstalled/rebooted/reinstalled Backup Exec, including purging the database and recreating the backup jobs. That didn't help.
After a reboot, I'll get a good backup, but the next night, when the backup is supposed to run, I instead get these errors. I've also noticed that *sometimes* the eject button will not work on the drive until I reboot the server.
I'm now thinking that I likely have a hardware problem, most likely the tape drive, but possibly the SCSI adapter or SCSI cable (internal).
Is there anything else that I should try to narrow down the cause of this problem? I'm thinking that I'm going to need to call support and get some parts, but before doing that, I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions of things that I might try.
Thanks.
John

Hi,
I called support about 11 days ago. Engineer had me remove the device from Backup Exec, and from Windows Device manager. Rebooted. This way the devices would be detected by Windows and the drivers reloaded. Flashed the firmware for the drive, despite it being the current version. Check to make sure I was using the latest Veritas tape driver. He sent me a copy of a tape diagnostic - TapeRx, and using that we identified a bad tape. Tested a second tape, and that one was good, so I used that. That night (Saturday), the backup failed (drive off-line in Backup Exec). Rebooted and the backup ran OK on Sunday & Monday nights. Tuesday night, it failed again. Same problem. Emailed support on Wednesday. No reply from the support person thru Monday evening. So, I emailed him again, and cc'd his manager. Received a call from a different support person yesterday morning. Apparently the tech had been out sick and due to some shuffling of personnel, the person that was in his team and backing him up, had been moved to another team.
We spent another hour or so reviewing windows logs, and checking several other things. He sent me a copy of their Dset utility that grabs logs and checks some system file versions, and I emailed the resultant file to him. Also ran the Backup Exec diagnostic and send that log to him. At this point, he shipped me a replacement drive (internal), internal scsi cable (includes terminator) & 39160 scsi card (server is still under warranty). I'll be installing them later this evening.
Because I swapped ports on the scsi card and that didn't make any difference, I believe that either I have a bad terminator (cable problem) or a bad drive. I'll be very surprised if I do the parts replacement if I still have the problem. Wej'll see in a few days.

What is Back-up Exec? I remember using TapeRx a long time ago - is this something DELL could provide? Do you have the link? I would be very interested in hearing about your outcome.
My tape drive problem is now minimal compared to what's going on today. I came in this morning, several users said they had trouble logging on - we use a PE2800 Dual Xeon for Terminal Services - the primary means for all users to run any windows applications. The SCSI controller has failed and a technician should be here tomorrow with - get this - a new motherboard and all the stuff that goes with it. Seems the SCSI controller is ON the motherboard. YIKES. I just got finished setting up my exchange server as an application terminal server and 'most' of what my users need is now available. What a nightmare.
Good luck with your troubleshooting.

Backup Exec is a 3rd party backup program. It is currently a Symantec product. Prior to Symantec's acquisition of them, it was a Veritas product. Prior to that it was a Seagate Software product.
You can read about it at www.backupexec.com. It has agents for Exchange/Domino, database products; i.e. SQL Server, in it's current version it offers CDP (Continous Data Protection). Backups can be made to tape/disk/usb drives/etc. A dumbed down version was included by Microsoft in Windows Server 2003.
I installed the replacement tape drive and SCSI card last night (Dell sent the wrong SCSI cable). They sent me an external cable instead of an internal cable. The backup ran last night. Waiting to see how it goes the next couple of nights.
