Server plain dead

PowerEdge R720xd server just died this morning with following error:

  • Normal Thu Sep 10 2020 04:35:26 An OS graceful shut-down occurred.
  • Normal Thu Sep 10 2020 04:35:26 OEM software event.
Critical Thu Sep  10 2020 04:37:17 A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 8 device 0 function 0.
  • Critical Thu Sep 10 2020 04:37:21 A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 28 function 7.
  • Normal Thu Sep 10 2020 04:37:21 An OEM diagnostic event occurred.

Now, the server won't even boot up. When powered on, there is no display on the console. It just stays dark. The HDD lights blink for a moment on startup then go out. We haven't added/modified any hardware on the server. The firmware were updated about a year ago.

Hi,

By moving the server to your office, you have unplugged the power cable and the system has no power to it, that should lead the system to power flea which could help the situation. Usually we would request users do power flea on the system, to try revive the system up.

Updating firmware could help the hardware do better data calculation and processing, it can help resolve the error. What you can do is, try doing a support assist log collection via iDRAC and keep it for monitoring. Clear the logs and check if the error still occurs.

Hi,

this could be related to any device installed in the system. You should go for the minimum to POST configuration to check if the systems startup then.

Minimum to POST configuration is the config that has the minimum components required to complete POST. Typically, the minimum to POST configuration for rack servers is PSU1, CPU1, memory module in A1 slot, and the default riser without expansion cards.

If the system starts and the POST screen is shown start adding the other devices step by step, always followed by a check if the system starts.

Please refer to this manual if you need some further assistance: Troubleshooting a No POST situation.

Let me know the results.

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi @DELL-Stefan R , we brought the server back to our office and it started right away. Don't know what caused it not to POST in the client's site. We have updated the firmwares. What are your thoughts?
