T110 II memory upgrade with standard voltage memory

I would like to use two ram modules 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 2Rx8 1.5v ECC UDIMM to upgrade the memory of a T110 II having the original configuration (4GB module Low voltage, service tag: removed by moderator) to 20 GB.

Will that work? (despite the difference in ram voltage)

Hi Vassilis,

Having all 3 DIMMs (20 GB total) isn't an option because all populated memory channels must have identical configurations (see pages 86-87 here: https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-t110-2_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf). Additionally, the Intel Xeon E3-1220 currently installed only supports 1066 and 1333 MHz DIMMs, and these 8 GB DIMMs are 800 MHz (see https://ark.intel.com/products/52269/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1220-8M-Cache-3_10-GHz).

Thanks,

Hi Trish

Thank you for your reply.

The info you've provided bout the memory configuration considering the memory banks is very helpful. I need you though if you please to clarify the voltage part of my question.

To sum up, considering that the RAM modules I was referring to were DD3-1600 (plus ECC 8GB 2Rx8 UDIMM etc) BUT 1.5 V (std voltage and not low voltage 1.35), could they upgrade the T110-II to 16GB (removing the 4 GB module)? (I mean despite the difference in voltage)

The 8GB DDR3-1600 DIMMs are not supported by your Intel Xeon E3-1220 processor because the clock speed (800 MHz) is too low. This CPU requires memory clock speeds of 1066 or 1333 MHz.

I'm sorry, I can't follow you. Do you mean that the clock speed of UDIMM ECC DDR3-1600 being 800Mhz is too low ?

Because I thought that DDR3-1600 is 1600Mhz which is OK for 1033 or 1333 configurations. Keep in mind that the replacement pn A6960121 for T110 II  is also DDR3-1600.

Finally, can I use standard voltage 1.5V ECC UDIMMS and not low voltage ones 1.35 with that server?

The 1600 refers to transfer rate in MT/s, not clock speed (MHz). If clock speed isn't listed on the DIMM itself, you can usually find this info by searching the DIMM part number and reviewing its specifications.

The T110 II supports both 1.35V and 1.5V DIMMs.
