T310 wont post
I recently picked up a used poweredge t310 server and found out one of the power supplies was faulty. I removed it and the server seemed to boot fine. It just wouldn't post. Do I need both power supplies in for it to post? If not I don't want to spend 90$ on a new one just to find out something else is wrong with the server.

If you have access to iDRAC you can check logs and POST code on iDRAC to see whether it have any details on failure. You can also check virtual console on iDRAC and see whether it is displaying the POST. Next you can try with a Minimum to Post. Remove all add on cards from the server motherboard and keep only CPU and 1 DIMM and see whether server POST with that.

Hi Shine, I'm new to Dell servers although I have a lot of experience with computers & networking in general. How do you gain access to the iDRAC and BMC on the T310? I've just been gifted one and am trying to find my way around. Thanks, Matt.

Hi Matt,
For T310, iDRAC is an upgrade of BMC. Basically BMC comes built in with the server, then iDRAC has 2 optional upgrade, 1 would be Express and another is Enterprise. The functionality of each management, varies from their upgrades. Since you're relatively new to Dell servers, you probably need to identify if the server comes with what version, BMC, iDRAC Express or iDRAC Enterprise.
Oh by the way, welcome to Dell and thanks you for the support.
To configure BMC / iDRAC EXP / iDRAC ENT, you need to access to Ctrl+E while booting (page 76). You will be prompted during boot to press Ctrl+E in order to access to the configuration page. You should be able to see if the page shows BMC or iDRAC, that would easy identify which version you have in the server. The user guide manual is at the bottom of my reply.
After you have configured the network properties of BMC or iDRAC, you can access to the IP that you have configured with a client system on the same network as your server.

Thanks Joey, It looks like I have BMC installed. From what I have read so far, the iDRAC is an installable module on the planar. I set the IP address of the BMC in the Ctrl-E setup screen and can ping it but cannot access it via HTTP. I used SeaMonkey browser as I find it seems to be able to access most things Chrome/Edge can't. How is it usually accessed? I also tried telnet via SecureCRT which didn't work. I've attached a screenshot. I've updated the BIOS, BMC & PERC 6/i to the latest.

Hi,
BMC does not have GUI like iDRAC does. The management is all done in CLI command via IPMI Tool controls are limited, in such shutting down, powering up and log collection. Here's a guide for BMC: https://dell.to/3CUZATl
Yes, you can upgrade BMC in a form of module, you can refer to page 119 on the previous user guide I provided in my reply.

Hi Joey, I invested in doth iDRACs and (Express & Enterprise) and they certainly make management easire. Firmware updates can be done via them. I thought that the enterprise iDRAC required activation but mine seems to work straight away after insertion. It also fixed the loud fan noise issue after the iDRAC/BMC firmware was updated.
