T610 CPU/Memory Upgrades

Hi guys

We currently have a Dell T610 server in our recently growing test lab running a rather large number of VMs on ESX 4. The server is a little underpowered for what we are trying to use it for. It currently has a single E5503 (2C, 2.0ghz, 4mb cache) CPU paired with 16gb of RAM (4x4gb dual rank 1333mhz RDIMMS). We currently have reached both CPU and memory constraints on the host, I can get away with only adding slightly more RAM, but I definitely need some more CPU headroom.

I am looking to upgrade this machine and was wondering what peoples opinion on the best way forward is. From what I see, I have the choice of getting another E5503 and a matching amount of RAM (perhaps 12gb per CPU @ 3x4gb each?), or alternatively upgrading the CPU to something along the lines of the E5620 (4C, 2.4ghz, 12mb cache) and upgrading the memory slightly to 24gb (6x4gb).

What would be the pros and cons of going each way (if any), or can anyone provide a better alternative suggestion? Would there be much performance difference between running either solution?

I would like to use third party suppliers for the parts if possible as it appears the Dell prices generally outrageous more expensive than Amazon or the such for spare parts/upgrades. Can anyone recommend some reputable and reasonably price UK hardware dealers?

Many thanks in advance for any advice! Let me know if you need anymore information or if I can clarify anything.

Regards, Marty

I would lean towards adding the second CPU and then the memory as well.  I know you said you would prefer third party parts purchase, but here are some parts you can use to compare or purchase if needed.  Someone else may have a different opinion on which way to go.  Taking advantage of the second CPU slot and memory banks is a bigger step up then just upgrading the existing CPU and small memory increase.

Part # 317-4084 -- $228.99  --  E5503 Xeon Processor, 2.0GHz, 4M Cache, 800MHz Max Mem, Customer Kit for PE T610/T710

Part # A2626072 -- 114.99 --  4 GB Replacement Memory Module for Dell PowerEdge T610 Server - 2R RDIMM 1333MHz

You'd want to verify that the 2nd CPU upgrade kit comes with the heatsink as the description doesn't mention that it's the 2nd processor kit, so it may not come with the heatsink (and I wouldn't recommend using retail heatsinks).

By the time you buy the processor and heatsink, you may be cheaper off getting an E5620 (which would be faster as 2 dual-core 2GHz vs 4 cores at 2.4GHz).

Memory does play a role though in this; each processor socket has it's own dimmslots. If you use 2 procs, you have to equip both processors with the same memory configuration.
