T640 GPU
Hi everyone, im going to buy a new server and in future i wanna have the possibility to install an high-end GPU to use hardware accelleration.
I saw that in the T440 is possible to install a single GPU and in the T640 is possible to install multiple GPU but only in rack mode? Is it true? No way to install a GPU in tower mode on the T640? I search some info and saw some pictures but i am not able to find what differencies are between tower and rack mode to make possible or not to install the GPUs

Hi,
Yes, to install GPU in a T640, it must be in Rack mode, reference page 88: https://dell.to/35U9UvB. In Rack mode, the air shrouds and placeholders are in a different position to create air flow. I'm unsure of more specifics of the architecture on GPU installation on T640, perhaps it's advisable to contact sales consultant to check in specifics. On page 88, it also states on GPU installation guidelines.

Hi, thanks for your reply!
Last question: at the moment we cant use the rack mode, so we are forced to buy the T640 in tower mode.
I see that is possible to conver the T640 from tower to rack mode: doing that will be possible to install the GPUs?
Or the T640 must be in rack mode from the purchase? Thanks!

Hello krond,
If you convert the T620 to rack configuration, you will be qualified to install GPU(s).
Some parts will come in the conversion kit and some will come with the GPU kit you select.
Page 127 of the link Joey posted covers converting the system from tower mode to rack mode.
For the conversion I was able to find a few part numbers you can check with sales when you purchase conversion kit and GPU kit that you have all required components:
Pn#770-BCJK, Tower to Rack,Conversion Kit,DELLEMC,T640,Customer Kit
Pn#MRY2P - ASSY both Shrouds For Side GPGPU Service. On GPU enabled system (two processor and also contains the main air shroud and GPU air shrouds).
The two external fans are mounted on the outside of the chassis for GPU configurations
Pn#8DF31 - ASSY Left External Fan For GPGPU Config
Pn#K22DD - ASSY Right External Fan For GPGPU Config
