I just ran the diagnostics within Server Administrator. Dell Remote Access Card:ERA or ERA/O-POST Result Test>details says "internal error: Unable to access the RAC device. Please make sure the RAC component is installed correctly and the services are running. If the problem persists, quit all nonessential applications using the device and run the test again.

Out of band test failed too...

Another note.. I'm running Server Administrator 5.0. Maybe it doesn't like the old RAC?

I'm pretty sure it isn't a frewall error because one of the machines is my IT Assistant box which currently does not have a firewall on.

I'm still having  the same problem.

"The connection to RAC Connection made by user pppaccount using device RACPORT was disconnected. " in the event log about 2 times a minute. I noticed that the two machines that have the error have the firmware rev 2.50 (build 07.21)

16 other machines with version 1.33, 3.0.0, 3.12 do not have this error message. The only other common thing between the two machines is that they are Poweredge 2650s.

I try running the firmware update and get the cute little screen with the 1s and 0s. It says collecting inventory... and the fails. Box says error and Inventory Failed. You hit ok and it stops.

It says to make sure i have telephony and remote access connection manager services enabled or i will get "inventory collection failed" I restarted both services (which were running) by hand and

I do not remember how I solved this problem; it was some time ago. I have the vague recollection that I stopped some WinNT service or other, but I can't remember which. For me, those machines are no longer in service.

Sorry.

Cheers!

Ok so it was a firewall problem. The remote access controller communicates on some weird internal virtual address of 192.168.234.235 on one of the servers. I had IPsec rules blocking all traffic from outside of our subnet. I turned those rules off and whammo the firmware update worked. With the connections working fine the error messages in the log stopped.

So how does Dell get from 'the RAC can't talk on this adapter on this address' to
Racport connected and disconnected 15billion times per day in my event log? ugh.

what firmware update are you referring to?

Systems Management: Dell Remote Access Controller - ERA and DRAC III/XT, Firmware, English, Multi System, v.3.35, A00 or soming else

that is the one. 3.35...

The errors didn't go away though until I fixed the communication problems to 192.168.234.235 on both machines that had the error messages.
