VLT0204 System board PS2 PG Fail voltage is outside of range. Contact support
Hi All,
I currently have two Dell Power Edge R720 servers. Both servers have redundant 1100W AC power supplies. Two weeks ago a power outage caused one power supply of each server to malfunction which were replaced under warranty by new power supplies.
Since then the PS2 socket of both servers have been reporting an error, VLT0204 System board PS2 PG Fail voltage is outside of range. Contact support.
In order to solve the problem I powered off the system and disconnected the power cords and pressed the power button. I then swapped the power supplies re-connected the power cords and powered on the system. I repeated this step for the second server. Both the systems now did not report the VLT0204 error.
However, the 'VLT0204 System board PS2 PG Fail voltage is outside of range. Contact support.' error message appeared on the front panel again. Repeating the steps above did not resolve the issue. I realised that this time the VLT0204 error became persistent.
Just to be sure that the error is persistent I cleared the hardware logs after which I can still see a critical error in the iDRAC Server Health -> Voltages section.
I used the DSET to generate the server report logs which too shows the VLT0204 error message. I can provide the entire zip file if needed.
Should I ignore this error message or should I send it to Dell for inspection under warranty.
Many Thanks
Sohaib

MSI-PK,
If the #2 power supply is removed all together, do you still get the error even when it is removed?
Also I would take the server to the Minimum hardware configuration, which is removing everything installed but the following;
Power it up with that configuration, you can also swap out Power Supply 1 with 2 to test both power supplies under this configuration, and see if the error is still present. If so, then likely the motherboards voltage regulator was damaged in the power outage you had stated.
If the error does clear, try adding the removed parts back to the server individually until the return of the error shows which device is causing the issue.
Let me know what you see.

Hi,
Based on your error, there is an issue with the power supply 2. You can test the power source by connecting the PSU cable for the impacted power supply to a known good source. If possible, swap the power cable with a known good cable. For T430, there is a PIB with cablings internally, try to reseat them. https://dell.to/412c9Ji. If possible, swap the PSUs between slots, and review if error is following PSU or staying in slot. If the error is following PSU, replace the PSU. If the error stays in slot, parts recommendation would include the system board and PIB/PDB if applicable.

When I remove the power supplies in the second socket form both servers, I can immediately see that the VLT0204 error message is cleared from the hardware logs.
The system then reports 'PSUA0016 PSU 2 is absent. Check PSU' error message which is expected.
When I plug the power supplies back into the servers the system does not report the VLT0204 error message. The error message I get is 'PSU0003 Power input for PSU 2 is lost. Check PSU cables' which is again as expected.
When I reconnect the power cords, both the systems report that the power supplies are fully redundant and then the VLT0204 error message comes again.
With regards to tearing down the server to a minimum hardware configuration I need some more time as both the server are in production. I will try to do it on one server and report back as soon as possible.
Many Thanks

MSI-PK,
Did you happen to test power supply #2 in slot #1, in order to verify that it is not the power supply itself causing this?
With the error clearing, and the server being functional under 1 power supply, I think the board might be damaged. Test PS #2 when you go to minimum hardware, and we will see.
Also Private Message me the Svc Tag, so I can verify the board installed.
Thanks

I sincerely apologise for the late reply and I also could not find time to test the server with the minimum configuration but I hope to do it as soon as I can manage time .
Yes I have tested by swapping the power supply 2 in socket 1 and vice versa and I got the same result. The system reports VLT0204 error message on the second power supply socket.
Alongside, when I run the system on power supply 2 in socket 1 the VLT0204 error message clears and I get 'PSUA0016 PSU 2 is absent. Check PSU' which is expected.
So far with all the test performed I have got consistent results where the system reports VLT0204 error message on the second power supply socket.
I am yet to perform the tests with the minimum configuration.
Many Thanks

I managed to bring the system to minimum configuration and in this state I did not get the VLT0204 error message. I tested the system with each of the power supplies in each of the two sockets which did not bring the VLT0204 error message. In fact what I saw was System board PS2 PG Fail' 'Good' in the voltages section.
Upon reassembling the server back to its original configuration step by step and swapping the power supplies at each step in order to reproduce the error VLT0204 had no effect. I would like to know what may have caused the error message to clear and not show up again.?
Many Thanks

Hi,
I am writing this nearly after two weeks of observation on the server and so far I have not yet encountered the VLT0204 error message again. If I encounter this message again I'll mention it in a new thread.
Many Thanks

I also had this error on R630, but it disappeared after swapping around PSUs to figure out what piece of equipment produces it.

I know this is old, but it has been very useful to me. I encountered the same problem on a Dell T430 recently, so followed the minimum config guidance and VLT0204 went away. I then put the parts back in, one at a time, and the problem hasn't recurred. Thanks for your help.

Hi Joey C,
Thanks for your assistance. I swapped the PSU's, and the error has been cleared. The System Board PS2 PG Fail status is now GOOD in iDRAC, and the voltage is stable.
