X520 10GbE Not Detected in R540 Server

Hi,

I have a brand new Poweredge 2U rackmount R540 server with 1 CPU. I purchased a 3rd party generic Intel X520-DA2 network card and attempted to install it. Unfortunately, it would not come up on the server. There was nothing in the device manager in Windows Server 2016, and no mention of the card in the hardware inventory via the lifecycle controller.

I tried it in both the motherboard PCIE slot, the low profile left riser slot, and the right full height riser slot. All to no avail. I also confirmed all the slots were set to enabled in the BIOS.

The kicker? The exact same card put in a Windows 7 system was detected and installed automatically with 2017 Intel drivers via Windows Update. Plug and play.

So, I figured that Dell servers don't support modern standards, and instead only work with Dell branded, tested and certified cards. Fair enough! I returned the card and ordered what was listed as a genuine Dell X520-DA2 card.

It was advertised as Dell Part number 01V3j card / 540-BBDR, which is listed on Dell's website as compatible with the R540. However, it behaves exactly as the generic card did. No signs of life in the server but it works fine in Windows 7.

I tried updating the firmware for both cards in Win 7 with various versions from Dell without success.

As for the 2nd card, I'm concerned I didn't get the real thing. The part number on site I purchased it from listed it as 01V3J but the actual card is labeled as 0VFVGR. It also has the number G18786-004 on it.

My questions are as follows:

1) Am I correct in assuming that Dell servers do not allow non-Dell 10gbe cards to operate?

2) If not, is there something I am missing in the default config that would prevent a standard 10gbe Intel network card from being detected?

3) If so, could someone provide a list of the exact 10GbE SFP+ cards that are compatible with this server and will be detected without issue? Also, any thoughts on whether or not my 2nd card is legit?

Thanks Much!

Hi,

No, we are not blocking any cards from working, non validated cards may or may not work, but we are not actively preventing them from working. 0VFVGR is a valid part number for an X520. It is not validated on the server though. The X710 part number Y5M7N  is the 10Gb Intel NIC that is validated, there are Qlogic and Broadcom ones as well. Are there dual processors in the system?  The low profile right riser slot should be first in the pcie priority.

Thank you for the prompt reply. It is indeed a dual processor capable system, but only 1 CPU is installed as ordered. I tried both of the two cards in all 3 slots (main board, right angle low profile, right angle full size) without luck.

This page does list the X520 as compatible with the R540 towards the https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/accessories/apd/540-bbdr?c=us&l=en&s=gen&sku=540-BBDR&mfgpid=239851

If you go customize and buy a R540 right now it lists the X520 as an option, and it doesn't require a second CPU be installed at least according to the ordering page.

Any further thoughts? Thanks!

Try booting to our live image and doing an lspci and see if anything shows up. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/4/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=C31J4

A supportassist bundle from the idrac may also be helpful. https://www.dell.com/support/article/bb/en/bbdhs1/sln306670/how-to-manually-create-the-supportassist-collection-with-idrac-9-?lang=en

Do you have any other types of cards that you can test?

I did as requested and the output from lspci is below. That is with the X520 card in the low profile riser. I also tried a SATA card in there. Same results.

It sounds like it might be an issue with something else in the PCIe chain, systemboard most likely since all of the risers have the same issue. Is the server under warranty?

Hallo,

Have you solved your problem? I have the same symptoms. I've tried both PCI-E cards, X520 and X710 and server don't see both of them. Now I have installed X710 and card in x16 slot. Radiator gets warm and LED's from transceivers acting on both sides - on the card and on the switch but it's not seen in "Device Manager" and also not in iDrac.

I've solved the problem.. sort of.. "Read Manual"
I have one CPU in my server. PCI-E x16 port can be used only with second CPU.
I need riser to be able to install X710 card with one processor.

Regards.

I also discovered that the lack of a second CPU voided a significant set of PCI slots, it was in the documentation but well hidden.

Anyway, I've got a dual R540; and added a x520-DA2. Card is detected and seems to be 'fine'. However, if I trie to do a UEFI/PXE boot across it, the system fails hard. Red scene of death. So, I suspect that the 540+x520 is a bad combination.

I'm now going to give a x710-DA2 a test and see if it works any better.

=> x710-DA2 and x710-T2 works fine with the R540 dual CPU.

:sigh:
