adding expansion cards to R410 server
I have an R410 server that I'd like to add a pci NIC card to. The problem is that the PCIe expansion slot is currently used by a PERC/6 raid card. I've read the hardware owners manual but my upgrade path is not completely clear to me. If I remove the existing PCIe raid card, and add an "integrated storage controller card" such as the HM030 in the "STORAGE_PCIE" slot on the riser, should I then be able to add a new NIC card in the PCIe expansion slot at the top of the riser? the hardware guide seems to imply that this is a supported configuration, but then says that only 1 expansion card is supported. (RAID-0 is fine for my application).
Thanks

The system’s expansion-card riser supports an x16 link Gen1 or Gen2 PCIe expansion card. (An additional slot on the riser is reserved for use by the integrated storage controller card.)
You should be able to use the upper slot for your NIC.

Yes, the R410 storage slot is ONLY for the SAS 6/iR controller card - all other expansion cards go in the other slot. That means that the only way to add a PCIe NIC is to switch to a SAS 6/iR controller in the storage slot. A couple of things to keep in mind ... 1) the SAS 6/iR will not have the same performance as a PERC, and 2), the Virtual Disks created on a PERC will not work on a SAS 6, meaning you cannot migrate your existing data directly - you will need to reinstall/rebuild from scratch.
