help dell r410 high fan speed

Hi guys ,

I recently notice that my server fans are loud so i checked the openmanage server administrator to find out if there was a hardware error.

There were no errors but i noticed one fan with a really high rpm ( 12000 rpm ) .

Other fans were below 8000.

What can be the cause of this ?

regards ,

Donovan

Hello.

The iDRAC/BMC controls the fans' RPM which varies depending on the ambient temperature. Ensure that the iDRAC/BMC firmware and system BIOS is up to date

Our R410 shows the same phenomena...

system board MOD 4A runs at 12840 to 13200 rpms

... everything is up2date here. resetting the IDRAC
(racadm reset hard) and/or rebooting the server

doesn't seem to 'fix' this.

I'm quite positive that our R410 didn't run at

this insane speed all the time - came across

this too when checking where the weird noise

comes from (doesn't sound defective - just louder

as it used to be).

Any clues?

Hello.

Have you drained the system flea power? Disconnect AC cables then press and hold the server power button for about 15 sec and reboot. You may notice some drop in fans' RPM.

Robert - thankyou for replying... ;)

We just went through the process you've suggested - but it didn't change anything.

FAN4 even raised its RPM and runs now on ~14000 rpms while all others are at 6000-8700 rpms.

What I noticed during testing/reboots was the message (emitted by something bios):

Fan 4 speed may change depending on system configuration and option card install.

... which - however doesn't seem to be the case here (at least it doesn't spin down a bit).

Digging around I came across (please read) this older thread:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/946/t/19287192

where a dell rep suggests that this behaviour is perfectly ok?!

Anyways - later in this thread some ppl claim that another update obviously fixed

something with regards to this fan4 speed...

... but it somehow didn't fix this for all of us?!

TIA for any more insights ;)

cheers,

Hello,
Same situation here. But I had a solution for it that fixed it partially.

What I did is update all my firmware, Bios, Chipset, BMC (did that last)

After BMC firmware update to 1.92, A00 everything wen't quiet !! IT WAS SO AWESOME!

Everything works fine until i restart my system. (after system restart everything goes back to it's old loud RPM)

I repeated the BMC update again (the same version firmware reupdated and it works fine after update again.)

And after system restart it resets again...

Please help.
Regards,

Tass

... glad you got it sorted. ;)

Unfortunately... we are running the R410 with IDRAC Enterprise - and because of this we

cannot apply the BMC firmware upgrade you're referring to.

The IDRAC firmware is latest on our side (2.85 A00 / IDRAC reports this as 2.85 (Build 04))...

... but this firmware seems to lack the specific bits which silence the fan :(

cheers,

Frank
